Under the Tents: Alex Ross’ Universal Monsters, Toddland, Otis Frampton, Mouse Guard

It’s beginning to feel a lot like… San Diego Comic-Con news season? Yes, we finally have enough news to update with our first SDCC 2017 Under the Tents edition, full of exhibitors who will be attending the convention this year.

So who can you find on the show floor in 2017? Let’s take a look:

• Illustrator and creator Erik Arreaga will return for the 20th year to exhibit at San Diego Comic-Con 2017.

• Artist Alex Ross – a SDCC mainstay – is once again returning to the convention, and he’s bringing along some ghoulish fiends. Alex Ross Fine Art will be launching the Classic Universal Monsters Set at SDCC 2017, which includes Boris Karloff’s 1931 Frankenstein, Bela Lugosi’s 1931 Dracula, Elsa Lanchester’s 1935 Bride of Frankenstein, the 1954 Creature from the Black Lagoon, Boris Karloff’s 1932 The Mummy, Lon Chaney Jr’s 1941 The Wolf Man, Claude Rains’ 1933 The Invisible Man, and Monster Mash.

• Our friends at Toddland are movin’ on up – but to where exactly, we’ll have to wait and see. We can’t wait to see how they plan to top their Bob’s Burger booth from 2016.

Do you want to hold that “End of Line” sign, help a lot of people, and get a free badge to WonderCon Anaheim 2017?

If you answered “yes”, then we have good news for you. Volunteer Registration for WonderCon Anaheim 2017 is now open – and unlike with San Diego Comic-Con, this isn’t the interest list. You’re actually registering. Simply log into your Member ID and click the “Volunteering” tab, then complete the instructions there.

WonderCon will be held March 31-April 2 at the Anaheim Convention Center. Hotels aren’t yet on sale, but are typically offered at a discount rate. And if volunteering isn’t your thing and you prefer to pay full price – badges are also on sale.

WonderCon Anaheim 2017 Badges Now On Sale

While San Diego Comic-Con registration may be going later and later — WonderCon registration keeps getting earlier, as Comic-Con International has unveiled a bit of a holiday treat for fans today. WonderCon Anaheim 2017 badges are now on sale!

Prices for the March 31-April 2 convention, which is moving back to Anaheim, are actually flat to 2016(!), with a three-day badge for 2017 running $65, a Friday or Saturday badge clock in at $30 each, and a Sunday-only badge comes in at $18. These are some of the best value badges around, and we’re honestly a bit surprised they didn’t see the traditional price hike.

Just like with last year, badges will be available online only. The convention has sold out the past few years, though nowhere near the speed of San Diego Comic-Con.

Similar to Comic-Con, you’ll need a Member ID to buy a badge, but unlike with SDCC, you can set up an ID today and still complete your purchase. And, new this year, WonderCon badges purchased prior to February 27 will be mailed (though just like with SDCC, international attendees will still pick up on-site). Those who purchase after February 27 will also pick up on-site.

Stay tuned for more updates about hotels.

Although WonderCon is smaller than Comic-Con, it still sees some amazing programming. Last year’s headliners included Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, Justice League vs. Young Justice, Lights Out, Shadowhunters, iZombie, Preacher, Scorpion, Orphan Black, and more. The full line-up for this year’s convention won’t be released until closer to the convention date in March.

San Diego Comic-Con Tops San Diego Convention Center ‘Regional Impact’ List (Again)

San Diego Comic-Con is a booming business — and not just for Comic-Con International.

Every year, the four-and-a-half-day convention brings jobs, tourists, and spending money not just to the convention center itself — but to the businesses and hotels around San Diego, in a big way (after all, attendees have to eat and shower somewhere — though sleeping in an actual bed is optional). So big, in fact, that SDCC has once again topped the San Diego Convention Center Corporation’s annual report as the convention center’s largest event, generating $140 million in economic impact to the region.

That’s an increase of $4.1 million from the 2015 fiscal year — though it should be noted that the Convention Center’s fiscal years runs from July of the previous year to June, meaning that since Comic-Con falls in July, we’re actually comparing SDCC 2015 to SDCC 2014. Comic-Con 2016 won’t appear on the fiscal report until next fall. Confused yet?

What’s not confusing, though, is that Comic-Con is a huge tourism boon for the city of San Diego. Combined, the Convention Center’s 158 events (which includes SDCC) generated $1.1 billion in economic impact – which means that Comic-Con’s $140 million is responsible for 12.73% of the total economic impact. The next largest contributor, LIGHTFAIR International, generated only $70.7 million — or 6.42% of the total economic impact.

Traditionally, the Convention Center follows this annual report up with a forecast for the following year with a more in-depth look at the profile of SDCC attendees — so keep an eye out for that next month. For now, though, here’s a general overview of the average Convention Center attendee for all 158 of their events:

With SDCC’s current contract with the San Diego Convention Center only set through 2018, and lots of recent setbacks in any expansion plan, findings like this one are important for helping to prove to to San Diego at large that Comic-Con is worth fighting for.

Volunteer Interest List for San Diego Comic-Con 2017 Now Open

With yesterday’s first San Diego Comic-Con 2017 badge contest, it might be time for us to awaken from our Odinsleep — especially now that we have the first news for volunteers.

If you’ve been dreaming of being one of the most integral parts of San Diego Comic-Con – or if you simply want to yell “Walk, don’t run!” to Comic-Con attendees and have them actually pay attention – then listen up, because the volunteer interest list for San Diego Comic-Con 2017 is officially open.

You can sign up now, by going into your Member ID and clicking on the “Volunteering” tab and following the instructions there.

This interest list does not guarantee that signing up will grant you a volunteer badge at Comic-Con. Instead, it’s simply your way of telling Comic-Con International that once volunteer registration opens up at some point in 2017, that you’d like to be notified to try for a remaining badge.

Returning volunteers will get first dibs at volunteer badges during Volunteer Registration, and do not need to sign up for the interest list.

While Returning Registration – formerly known as Preregistration – won’t be taking place until early 2017, that doesn’t mean that this fall is shaping up to be low on Comic-Con news. After yesterday’s news of a contest from Fox Home Entertainment and Amazon.com to send one lucky winner and a guest to San Diego Comic-Con 2017, we’ve got word of another contest.

‘The San Diego Conquest’ Comic Launches on Kickstarter

The path to a certain convention in San Diego is often fraught with peril, obstacles both great and small, heartbreak — and hopefully, a lot of joy. That’s what writer Mario Candelaria (Ashes, Corktown), illustrator Rob Alan (The Heart Collector), colorist Lesley Atlansky, and letterer Taylor Esposito plan to explore in their comic, The San Diego Conquest.

The comic, an “homage to convention culture and all the super fun (as well as super stressful) experiences that come when fandoms from around the world all converge all in an effort to express their love for whatever their cup of tea just might be”, recently launched on Kickstarter.

The 120 page graphic novel follows three friends on their way to the biggest convention around — writer/cosplayer Becca who hopes to get an editor to review her portfolio, a gamer named DeSean looking to score both exclusives and a chance to meet his online flirt in “real life”, and Ashton, Becca’s jock brother who wants to be anywhere else.

“The idea for this story was born during my very first trip to San Diego Comic-Con,” Candelaria said. “I was new to comics and thought the con would be a good place to pitch to publishers. Boy was I wrong! I became immediately enamored with the atmosphere and thought it’d be a great setting. Over the years as I got more involved in the community and saw deeper levels I really started to forge the narrative, but it wasn’t until I spoke with Rob more that the story became what it is now.”

As most Comic-Con attendees know, the journey to San Diego is rarely as simple as simply buying a ticket/badge and showing up. The San Diego Conquest will chronicle a lot of the specific challenges convention-goers face, from the possible disappointment of meeting your favorite celebrity to scoring a hotel.

“I tried to put as much of what I love and hate about cons into the story as possible. There’s a fine like to walk with paying homage to all the little quirks and also keeping the story moving forward, so there were some things we had to cut. However, I can say that a hotel fiasco will be very prominent in the first act,” Candelaria said.

The project, which has a $20,000 goal, runs through December 22, 2016. Various reward levels include options like digital copies, a physical printed book (and now through November 15, you can score an Early Bird special for just $20), exclusive prints, exclusive covers, convention-themed merit badges, and more.

Domestic shipping is just $3 — and while international shipping is a fair bit more, Candelaria said it couldn’t be helped.

San Diego ‘Convadium’ Measures Fail — Where Does Expansion Go From Here?

Tuesday’s election wasn’t just about electing our next President (or even the Senate). In every state, there are also local ballot measures — and in San Diego, that included two proposed measures that could have seen a new Chargers stadium and a convention center annex built downtown.

Now, both of those measures have been defeated.

The Citizens’ Plan, spearheaded by attorney Cory Briggs, former City Councilmember Donna Frye, and a group of other proponents (including real estate developer JMI Realty’s John Moores), had been pushing to raise hotel taxes (from 12.5 to 16.5 for Measure C, or 15.5 for Measure D, though the latter was sponsored by environmentalists) to some of the highest in the nation in order to fund the convadium.

Although some community leaders like Mayor Faulconer eventually came around to supporting the measures, Comic-Con International was never on board.

Comic-Con International’s David Glanzer even wrote an op-ed piece back in March in the U-T, stating in it, “Comic-Con believes that a contiguous convention center expansion (one that is connected to the current facility) would be best for Comic-Con, and most beneficial for any large event San Diego might host in the future.” In the article, he makes several good points for why a non-contiguous expansion wouldn’t be the best option for conventions — including fear of ambush marketing in the second facility, and separating out vendors to the detriment of foot traffic, sales, and more.

Although Briggs had hinted that should either Measure lose a 2/3 vote but still gain a simple majority, he would have pursued legal avenues to secure a victory — Measure C only walked away with 41% support, which Measure D carried only 40%.

So what’s next?

The Chargers will explore their options — which could involve relocating to another city or putting forth another ballot measure, possibly for a different location in San Diego to build their stadium (though if the latter is true, it likely won’t include the convention center annex).

As for both The San Diego Convention Center and Comic-Con International and the possibility of an expansion onto the current Convention Center — for now, everything is just on hold.

Although all the way back in 2013, the California Coastal Committee approved a plan to raise hotel taxes (3% for the hotels closest to the Convention Center, though there’s more to it) to cover the costs of a contiguous expansion, Briggs had sued and a judge ruled the plan unconstitutional because it hadn’t been voted on by the electorate. So for the moment, it would seem the only way to get that contiguous expansion would be for another group to submit their own ballot measure.

That could still happen. However, if it doesn’t, just how important is that expansion to CCI? They re-signed to stay in San Diego through at least 2018, and Glanzer mentioned on a podcast with Voice of San Diego earlier this year that they’re working to secure hotel rates for 2019-2021, at least hinting that they’re planning to stay put regardless.

For now though, we’re all back to square one.

First Wave of Special Guests for WonderCon 2017 Revealed

San Diego Comic-Con 2017 Preregistration (now re-branded as Returning Registration) may be pushed off until “early next year”, but Comic-Con International has still been busy.

Not only have they just announced SAM, Storytelling Across Media – a one-day symposium in San Francisco on November 5 dedicated to the art of storytelling – but now we also have the first information on WonderCon Anaheim 2017.
