Comic-Con International's 2016 Inkpot Awards and Icon Award winners!
You can never do everything at Comic-Con. Which is partially why Comic-Con HQ, the joint venture streaming service from Comic-Con International and Lionsgate, exists — to bring the convention right to you, in your living room.
They’ve launched several panels from the convention, which are now streaming on their site, including:
A subscription to the service is $5 per month, with the first 30 days free. You can sign up now.
They’d originally hoped to get panels up online just days after the convention — so this timeline is interesting, but it’s a good mix of high-profile panels that you can watch for the first time, or re-live.
Welcome to the GeekShot Photo Exclusive Series. This will be a weekly post featuring cool, interesting, or just plain awesome moments we have captured during San Diego Comic-Con and WonderCon. Each week we’ll post a photo by Beth or James of GeekShot Photography. We may include a short story about the photo, but sometimes we’ll just let the photo speak for itself.
About This Photo
Kylo Ren statue at the Kotobukiya booth at San Diego Comic-Con 2016.
It didn’t take long for a statue photo to make it in the series from 2016. While my love for taking photos of statues didn’t change this year, something else changed. I took a lot fewer photos this year than any of the last five years.
What changed? Hall H and the overall number and type of panels I attended. I didn’t go to Hall H and I only attended two panels in the con itself. For both of them I wasn’t even close to the front, so I didn’t take more than a few photos. Besides walking the show floor for a few hours over two days, I went to one Nerd HQ Conversation, two Conan tapings, Camp Conival for a couple hours, and stopped by a couple Gaslamp offsites like the Star Trek 50th art exhibit. Basically, if I don’t have a parade of actors and other panelists sitting in front of me all day long, I’m going to take fewer photos.
It’s interesting though that I don’t think I will have fewer possible photos for this feature. I was able to take my time this year and shoot what and how I wanted. Having that luxury, instead of shooting as many photos as I can in the hopes of getting a few decent shots, means that I have a much better keep ratio.
In short: make each shot count > spray and pray.

Just like Hasbro (whose online sale launches August 9) – Mattel is bringing back their After Party Sale, where anyone who wants to purchase select San Diego Comic-Con exclusives can. The sale will open at 9AM on Monday, August 15 (and while no time zone was given, we’re assuming PT) – where you’ll be able to choose from “more than a dozen unique items from Monster High®, HALO®, Ghostbusters™, WWE®, and more”, according to Mattel.
They do caution that “some of them are down to very limited quantities, so make your wish list and get ready to shop early”.
You can find the full list of Mattel’s San Diego Comic-Con exclusives here, and be sure to keep an eye out on Monday morning, as this is your last chance to snag Mattel SDCC items.
This will also be one of the last times to experience MattyCollector.com as you know it – as as of December 31, 2016, the website will be going away. Super7 will be taking over the manufacturing and delivery of Masters of the Universe and other collector lines – and they’ll also unveil the expanded line for MOTU at SDCC 2017.
We’re still not recovered from San Diego Comic-Con 2016 – but it seems we’ve got our first bit of news about San Diego Comic-Con 2018.
As first reported by An Englishman in San Diego, it’s entirely possible that we have San Diego Comic-Con 2018 dates: July 19-22, 2018.
For the last few years, the dates for future conventions have been quietly revealed on the San Diego Convention Center’s website, well ahead of an official announcement from Comic-Con International. Back in October, we shared 2017 dates, which were later confirmed by CCI last month. And now, the Convention Center has quietly added a new entry that looks very familiar to SDCC attendees:
130,000 attendees? A Thursday-Sunday convention, in the exact same week as the convention was held in 2016 and will be held in 2017? Not much else that could be.
Historically, the San Diego Convention Center leaves off Wednesday’s Preview Night date from their calendar, which would set the convention at July 18-22, 2018 for all four and a half days.
Currently, 2018 is the last contracted year for San Diego Comic-Con to stay in, well, San Diego – but negotiations are ongoing for future years. Hopefully we’ll have some news on that front sooner rather than later.
