Gam3rCon 2017 Shifts Away From San Diego Comic-Con Week – Early Bird Tickets on Sale

There’s potentially either good or bad news about Gam3rCon, the popular gaming offsite convention which celebrates all forms of gaming from table top to arcade to the biggest names in the industry.

For the past several years, the mini-convention has been held to coincide with San Diego Comic-Con. For 2017, though, it’s shifting its dates – to earlier in July, running from July 5 – July 9.

For those who viewed Gam3rCon as a fun additional offsite to spend some time during SDCC, this is obviously sad news. But for those locals who felt they weren’t getting to spend as much time at Gam3rCon as they liked because there’s always a million things vying for your attention during Comic-Con, this may be great news.

Through today, you can grab Early Bird tickets for $30 for a week-long adult ticket (or $20 for a child). After today, ticket prices will go up – and there’s usually a pre-sale in the coming weeks.

Gam3rCon 2017 will be held at the Tenth Avenue Arts Center (930 Tenth Avenue).

For more information on Gam3rCon 2017, check out their site.

Will you still be attending Gam3rCon? Will you miss it during SDCC? Let us know in the comments.

Details About San Diego Comic-Con Returning Registration Emerge — But Still No Date

First off: We still don’t know when Returning Registration or Open Registration for San Diego Comic-Con 2017 are happening. But thanks to a new update from Comic-Con International, we do know some information. The system will apparently look largely like it has in the past, with the EXPO Logic Waiting Room (formerly EPIC Registration) still in play. You’ll still be able to purchase up to three badges during the sale, including for yourself, assuming that each individual person is eligible on their own. For Returning Registration, that means that each person must have attended in 2016 as a general attendee (so no press, pros, volunteers, etc.). For Open Registration, all you need is a Member ID. The biggest change this year is that badges will now be shipped directly to the badge holder, rather than the individual buyer. That’s good news for many, and should make group buying easier, as you won’t have to worry if your buyer is going to ship you your badge. However, just like last year, international attendees will still pick up their badges onsite. We also now have badge prices for 2017 – with prices up $5 per day Wednesday-Saturday for adults, and Sunday staying flat to last year. Here’s a look at this year’s prices: What’s most interesting to us about this news is that EXPO Logic told us a few weeks ago that they weren’t currently contracted to work with CCI this year. Considering how delayed everything has been, we’ve been assuming that they’re moving to a new system. Since they’re not, does that mean that CCI attempted a new system and tested it extensively, found it lacking, and decided to go back to EXPO? Or does it mean that these late badge sales are just “the new normal”? Are you excited to at least have some information? Let us know in the comments.

An Intimate Look at San Diego Comic Fest 2017

The 2017 Con season has begun! While everyone is still patiently waiting on San Diego Comic-Con 2017  Returning Registration news, there are still a lot of other conventions that are starting to get underway.  In fact, this past weekend was filled with events nation-wide ranging from Long Beach Comic Con to Toy Fair New York – to one of San Diego’s own conventions, the 5th annual San Diego Comic Fest.

If you haven’t yet heard of SD Comic Fest, it is a more intimate convention experience that is “reminiscent of the early Comic-Cons”. San Diego Comic Fest actually got its start in 2012 by one of San Diego Comic-Con’s founding members, Mike Towry.

This year, Comic Fest celebrated its 5th year and was held at its new location, the Four Points by Sheraton Hotel. Advertised as the “friendly, intimate comic con experience”, Comic Fest prides itself on bringing us a bit closer to the feel of those Comic-Con early days, and it delivers fully on that experience.

Certainly smaller in scale than that of San Diego Comic-Con, the Fest still offers up a variety of experiences and fun. From offerings such as an artist alley, exhibit floor, and cosplay corner to the Kirby Cafe and panels such as the ‘X-Men Mock Trial on Mutant Rights’ and a ‘Girl Scout Cadette Comic Artist Badge Workshop’.  There was even a little bit of Comic-Con International thrown into the mix with ‘Comic Cons and the Future of Fandom’ where CCI’s own David Glanzer joined Rob Salkowitz in chatting about the growth of comic conventions.

The San Diego Comic Fest is a casual atmosphere that offers up a laid back, no pressure, intimate experience where you can just hang out with fellow fans and professionals alike. There was even a bar in the hallway outside the panel rooms – and for a more kid friendly experience, a game room filled with piles of games to play. Even though the atmosphere is not quite like the July giant of San Diego Comic-Con, it is still a fun time with a varied offering of experiences in a smaller more intimate scale.

For a look at what the San Diego Comic Fest had to offer last weekend, you can check out this photo gallery:

Plans are already in motion for next year’s San Diego Comic-Fest theme, celebrating the 200th anniversary of Frankenstein. If you are interested in attending next year, be sure to keep an eye out for any updates. You can find more information on their website.

Are you interested in checking out next year’s San Diego Comic Fest?  Did you attend this year?  What was your favorite part of the Comic Fest experience?  Let us know in the comments.

San Diego Officials Seek to Keep Convention Through 2021

Even though it can feel like the biggest question surrounding San Diego Comic-Con right now is when badges for 2017 will go on sale – it’s actually whether or not Comic-Con will need to find a new home in two years years, when its contract with the San Diego Convention Center comes to an end in 2018.

Negotiations are currently underway to keep San Diego Comic-Con in the city through 2021, as San Diego UT reports, but it’s far from a done deal. The biggest obstacle, just as it was in 2016 negotiations? Hotel rates.

The cost of a hotel (particularly downtown) can eat up a large portion of attendees’ budgets, with hotel room block rates per night ranging anywhere from $179 at the Days Inn San Diego Hotel Circle South to $375 for a suite at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego. All of those prices are for just one person – add more people to the room, and the rates only go up.

San Diego Tourism Authority CEO Joe Terzi told U-T, “Comic-Con’s major concern, as it has been for the last several years, is having their attendees be able to afford this, so they want to know, what are the rates and what space will you allocate to me. In the major downtown hotels, they’ll try to get 90 percent of the inventory guaranteed and minimal rate increases per year.”

Current rates, as high as they might seem, would be substantially worse without the convention block rates that Comic-Con International helps negotiate. Without the special Comic-Con discounted rate, rooms can go for over $800 a night, which would price out a large percentage of attendees. During a recent panel at San Diego Comic Fest hosted by Rob Salkowitz, CCI’s Chief Communication and Strategy Officer David Glanzer explained more.

“Some of the biggest problems we have right now are hotel room blocks. We try to get as many rooms at a hotel as we possibly can, and we try to negotiate a fair rate. And that fair rate is higher than what that rate would normally be. But, it’s something that the hotels really want, and I think it’s something that if we’re careful with it, hopefully our fans can afford,” Glanzer said in the panel. “Our contract expires next year, and we’re having some trouble with that because some hotels want to give us less room blocks, charge more for those room blocks, and then charge exorbitant rates outside of that. Their argument is, and this isn’t all hotels, but a lot of their argument is, ‘Well, yes, your fans might not be able to pay for that, but the studio execs would pay that in a heartbeat’. And we have to tell them, yes, but if there’s no fans, there’s no studio execs. And that’s really a hard thing for people to understand.”

According to U-T, the San Diego Tourism Authority, which helps to negotiate the contract, is “awaiting a formal term sheet from Comic-Con but says organizers are hoping to cap room rate increases at 4 percent over a three-year period”. However, just like in 2016, they’ll have to go to each individual hotel to convince them to join in the convention room block and to negotiate exact room percentages.

Terzi told U-T that “while the major convention hotels — Marriott Marquis, Manchester Grand Hyatt, Omni and the bayfront Hilton — will typically cap rates on 90 percent of their rooms, the balance of the downtown hotels generally agree to set aside anywhere from 60 percent to 90 percent of their inventory for the Comic-Con block”.

This process is what delayed the 2016-2018 contract from being signed for several months, but Terzi hopes to complete negotiations on the proposed new three year contract prior to this year’s convention in July, extending Comic-Con’s stay in San Diego through 2021.

While hotel rates are the biggest hurdle to cross for keeping Comic-Con, it’s not the only one. Convention center expansion has gotten some good news of late, but it still faces several challenges (both legal and logistical) that are very unlikely to be resolved by this summer, or possibly even this year. One thing that helps mitigate that, however, is the use of offsite space at downtown hotels like the Hilton Bayfront and the San Diego Marriott and Marquis, which offer space to CCI for free. Use of that space is part of the ongoing  contract negotiations as well.

In an interview last year with Voice of San Diego, Glanzer explained that while both hotel rates and convention center space are issues, “it’s hard to quantify which is the biggest thing.”

“I think it depends which cycle you’re in,” Glanzer said. “We knew back in 2006 that we were going to have issues with space. But luckily in working with the convention center, with local hotels, with the mayors and city council, we’ve been able to mitigate some of those problems.”

Hopefully that continues. We’ll keep you updated.

Special thanks to Lisa McDowell for additional San Diego Comic Fest reporting.
