Under the Tents: Cancer Gets LOST, Patrick Ballesteros, Camilla d’Errico, NECA

We hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend. The “unofficial start of summer” usually brings families together for picnics and barbecues. Mom and dad take the cover off the pool, and we’re finally able to dip our toes into the water. As for us here at the UBlog, we stayed on top of all things San Diego Comic-Con (in between helpings of hot dogs and potato salad). The internet never sleeps, so neither do we.

Here’s a look at what you might have missed:

  • If you think we’ve been busy, you should see what artist Camilla d’Errico has been up to. Over the long weekend, she posted her Pikachu work-in-progress for her “Summer Safari” series she will have available at SDCC 2017. Later, she posted her list of scheduled cons, which included SDCC 2017, of course. She also showed us her new book, Femina and Fauna, which she will debut at SDCC 2017. Finally, she showed us more of her Rainbow Lion from her “Summer Safari” series. Does she ever sleep?

  • Our good friend and local artist Patrick Ballesteros gave us a sneak peek at some of the buttons he will have for his SDCC 2017 scavenger hunt. He wants us to stay tuned for details, and we gladly will.

  • If you saw NECA’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles exclusive announcement, and chances are you did, you’re asking how you can get a hold of these if you’re not going to SDCC. You may not have to resort to eBay just yet. NECA announced that they will make a limited quantity available for pre-order for non-attendees. These pre-orders will ship the week of San Diego Comic-Con, so it’ll kind of be like you’re there.

  • Outlander author Diana Gabaldon answered an eager fan’s tweet asking if she would be at SDCC this year with the rest of the Outlander cast with a resounding, “Very likely!” Looks like a good sign for Outlander fans.

  • We here at the UBlog are getting very excited about The Ninjabot’s daily buttons for SDCC 2017. You may just see some blank, aluminum buttons, but we see endless possibilities. We’re excited to stop by Small Press Booth #L-08 to see what these possibilities, including a super-secret button, will be.

  • Tom Hodges and Katie Cook (Katie Can Draw) teamed up for antiis comics and will both be at antiis’ booth at SDCC with Katie’s interpretation of Midknight and BORIS enamel pins. They’ll also have Issue #2 of Midknight with them.

San Diego Comic-Con 2017 Badge Design, Souvenir Book Cover Revealed

For those lucky individuals who received their San Diego Comic-Con badge today (and a friendly reminder to never post a photo of your badge on social media with your name showing), there was an added level of surprise: New this year, the badges appear to come in a box promoting CCHQ, and also include a commemorative Comic-Con International pin. Best of all, this is the inaugural badge box – with a new design presumably set to be released each year.

This year’s badge design feature The Walking Dead‘s Rick Grimes.

Here’s a look at the box, the pin, and the badge:

Also included in the box was a first look at this year’s Souvenir Book cover, which features Jack Kirby, as part of a special “In Memoriam” section which will remember comic book legends like Kirby and Will Eisner, as well as the 100th anniversaries of comics creators Reed Randall, Bill Everett, and Sheldon Mayer.

The 240-page Souvenir Book is handed out to every attendee at the event, and can be picked up on-site at the convention center (along with your lanyard and WB bag) in the Sails Pavilion.

Thanks to @ for the additional reporting.

Cryptozoic San Diego Comic-Con 2017 Exclusives [UPDATE May 30]

Cryptozoic Entertainment kicked off San Diego Comic-Con exclusives season this year with their amazing Golden Goddess DC Comics Bombshells, but that’s not all they’re bringing to the con. You can find them at Booth #115.

Let’s take a look at this year’s exclusives:

[UPDATE May 30]

Have you ever danced with the devil in the moonlight? Cryptozoic’s third San Diego Comic-Con exclusive is getting a little bloody, with their SDCC exclusive DC’s The Joker Calling Card Statue – “Bloody Noir” Edition.

The 7″ polyresin statue features the villain’s iconic gloved hand splattered with blood, and comes with four interchangeable Joker cards, as well as an exclusive variant exclusive promo card.

Each figure is hand-numbered from 1 to 200 and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity, making it one of the most limited statues from Cryptozoic ever, and will retail for $100.

Just like the other Cryptozoic exclusives, you’ll be able to pre-order the item, starting on June 6 at 10AM PT on their site. You’ll be able to pick-up on-site at their booth during the con – or if you’re shut out in the pre-sale, they’ll be saving some figured for on-site sales.

[UPDATEApril 25]

It’s a big year for Harley Quinn as she celebrates her 25th anniversary in 2017, and Cryptozoic is celebrating by going a little crazy (in a good way).

We’ve got the exclusive details on Cryptozoic’s second San Diego Comic-Con exclusive: the Metallic Red 25th Anniversary Harley Quinn Lil DC Bombshells Figure. Cryptozoic’s regular DC Lil Bombshells Harley Quinn figure is re-imagined here in a variant, solid red with a metallic finish, and each piece is stamped with a “Harley Quinn” 25 logo on the base to help commemorate the occasion. Each figure will also be individually hand-numbered from 1 to 500 (the lowest run Lil’ DC Bombshells figure ever produced!), and will retail for $25.

Similar to the Golden Goddesses, Metallic Red Harley will be available in limited quantities in a pre-sale starting May 5 at 10AM (and we’ve been assured the kinks from the last pre-sale have been worked out). You’ll be able to pick-up on-site at their booth during the con – or if you’re shut out in the pre-sale, they’ll be saving some figured for on-site sales.

[UPDATE April 3]

Now that WonderCon is behind us, it’s time to turn our full attention to San Diego Comic-Con — and with badge and hotel sales happening so late this year, it can be easy to forget just how close the convention really is. So close, in fact, that we’ll get our first San Diego Comic-Con exclusive pre-sale this week, courtesy of Cryptzoic Entertainment.

Cryptozoic will be offering 7″ SDCC exclusive DC Comics Bombshells, the Golden Goddess Series. There are three vinyl figures in the series, including Harley Quinn, Wonder Woman, and Catwoman. Each figure is limited to 250 pieces, and will retail for $40 each, or $100 for all three.

You’re be able to get your hands on all three right now on Cryptozoic’s website, for pick-up at the convention. A $25 deposit is required, and you’ll pay the additional $75 (plus California sales tax) at Booth #115 on Thursday-Sunday 10AM-4PM when you come by to pick them up. [UPDATE] These are now sold out. You can still pick up one of the remaining 200 sets at San Diego Comic-Con, available Thursday-Sunday (but not Preview Night) at their booth..

Here’s a look at the figures:

Will you be making this your first San Diego Comic-Con 2017 exclusives purchase? Let us know in the comments.

NECA San Diego Comic-Con 2017 Exclusives

Last year’s Arcade Appearance Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sets were one of the hottest exclusives at San Diego Comic-Con — and we’re excited to see what NECA has in store for 2017.

While there have been no details announced yet about how this year’s buying process will work, 2016 introduced an online pre-sale for booth pick-up.

Here’s a look at this year’s exclusives:

[UPDATE May 30]

After a very long week of teases, NECA is finally ready to unveil their first San Diego Comic-Con exclusive – and it rivals last year’s amazing Teenage Mutant Ninja set. This year, Fwoosh reveals that NECA will be bringing along a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Collector’s Case Set, which includes eight figures, including all four Turtles, Shredder, Krang, and two Foot soldiers, as well as accessories (including weapons, alternative hands, and of course, a pizza). All figures come in an awesome retro carrying case.

The set retails for $200, and will be available to attendees and non-attendees alike on NECA’s site in June.

From Fwoosh, here’s a look at the set:
