Cryptozoic New York Comic Con 2017 Exclusives

Cryptozoic created some of our favorite San Diego Comic-Con exclusives this year (like that gorgeous Golden Goddess DC Comics Bombshells set!) – and now, they’re turning their attention to New York Comic Con.

This year, they’ll be offering presales for three New York Comic Con exclusives, for booth pick-up at Booth #244 at NYCC. For each pre-sale (see the schedule with the individual exclusives below), there will be a blog post on their website the Monday before that week’s presale. In that post, there will be a section which will be updated with a link to the presale at 10AM on the corresponding day.

Cryptozoic will have an additional supply of all three collectibles for purchase at its booth while supplies last.

Let’s take a look at this year’s exclusives:

“Powerful in Pink” Wonder Woman is a variant of the Series 1 DC Bombshells vinyl figure. It boldly features the color pink on all of Wonder Woman’s clothing. Designed by Pedro Astudillo and sculpted by Anders Ehrenborg, the 7-inch figure comes packaged in a display-worthy special edition window box. Each box is individually hand-numbered from 1 to 750. The presale commences September 8, with the figure offered for $40.

“30th Anniversary Edition” Metallic Red Ryu is a variant of the Series 1 Street Fighter Lil Knockouts vinyl figure. To commemorate the 30-year history of Capcom’s Street Fightervideo game series, this version of Ryu stylishly sports only the iconic red color associated with the character’s headband. Each 2.75-inch figure is stamped with “30th Anniversary” on the base and comes individually hand-numbered from 1 to 300, making it the lowest-run Street Fighter Lil Knockouts collectible Cryptozoic has produced to date. Designed by Pedro Astudillo and sculpted by Sam Greenwell, it comes packaged inside Cryptozoic’s signature collectible tin. The presale starts September 15, with the figure offered for $25.

“New York Comic Con Edition” Lois Lane is a variant of the Series 2 DC Lil Bombshells vinyl figure. The newspaper in the figure’s hand features the headline “New York Comic Con” and lists the dates of this year’s show. Each limited edition 2.75-inch collectible is stamped with “New York Comic Con Exclusive” on the base and comes individually hand-numbered from 1 to 300, making it the lowest-run DC Lil Bombshells figure Cryptozoic has produced to date. Designed by Pedro Astudillo and sculpted by Sam Greenwell, it comes packaged inside Cryptozoic’s signature collectible tin. The presale begins September 22, with each figure offered for $20.

GeekShot Exclusive Photo Series Vol. 4 (Week 15.1)

Welcome to the GeekShot Photo Exclusive Series. This will be a regularly recurring post featuring cool, interesting, or just plain awesome moments we have captured during San Diego Comic-Con and WonderCon over the years. Each post will include a photo by Beth or James of GeekShot Photography. We may include a short story about the photo, but sometimes we’ll just let the photo speak for itself.

About This Photo

Jason Momoa at the Aquaman segment of the WB panel during San Diego Comic-Con 2017.

With his typical attitude, Jason Momoa is a bit of a rock star at conventions. He took it to a literal level upon his arrival to the Hall H stage this year.

His entrance was in grand style, running from the back of the hall through the center aisle before going on stage. There was music and spotlights to follow him through the hall. When he made it on stage, he used his trident to play air guitar before spiking it on the stage. It was the kind of entrance that leaves an impression.

Those of us in the press section were given advance notice he would be entering this way. It didn’t do me much good until he got on stage though since everyone stood and there was no way to actually see him unless you were close enough to the aisle. Once he was on stage, though, we got a great performance. The lighting was dramatic, but that also means it was difficult to shoot. As you can see, I was not quite prepared for the bright light and the photos are overexposed in some parts. It wasn’t too bad though and I got lucky enough to capture these photos.

Now if only I had been prepared when Gal Gadot walked right in front of me a few minutes later. The rest of the cast of Justice League entered from the back of the hall as well and Gal walked down the side I was on to get ready while Momoa was talking about Aquaman. Oh well. It was dark and the photos probably wouldn’t have been that good. I have some while she was on stage that I’m sure will make it into a GeekShot post eventually. Beth has posted one already.

Who impressed you with their entrance to a panel at SDCC? Let us know in the comments.

The Shruggie Awards of San Diego Comic-Con 2017 – Winners

San Diego Comic-Con was filled to the brim this year with a lot of amazing things – including panels, exclusives, offsites, and so much more.

We’re excited to launch our first ever The Shruggie Awards, which, despite the name, is not celebrating the “wtf-ness” of the convention (though there’s plenty of that to go around as well!). No, these are the best of the best (and okay, one of the worst) things about the convention – and now, after letting you vote, we’re excited to announce the winners!

The Best Panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2017: Psych

The Psych-o’s pulled it out! For fans of Psych, the Ballroom 20 panel felt like the homecoming that the series deserved. And, given that series creator Steve Franks announced he hopes to keep making more Psych movies (because we can’t have the last one be with minimal Tim Omundson!) – hopefully we’ll be seeing a lot more of our favorite psychic detective series.

The Best Panelist at San Diego Comic-Con 2017: John Barrowman

Any time there’s a panel with John Barrowman on it, you can put money on the fact that he will be the most entertaining person in the room. Barrowman was on three panels all week – including his semi-annual Anything Goes with John Barrowman spotlight panel, Syfy Hosts The Great Debate, and Legendary’s Cursed panel – but our personal favorite goes to The Great Debate. If you missed Barrowman singing his own lyrics to Star Wars, you missed out.

The Best Offsite at San Diego Comic-Con 2017: Conan

Conan returned to San Diego Comic-Con for the third year – and it still continues to be both one of the hottest tickets in town, as well as insanely entertaining. Attendees at the tapings are treated to interviews with special guests without having to camp out for Hall H, as well as a free exclusive SDCC Conan Funko Pop!. It doesn’t get better than that.

The Best VR experience at San Diego Comic-Con 2017: Blade Runner 2049

VR continues to be all the rage, and Blade Runner 2049 created the best experience at the convention. While we didn’t personally go through the VR portion of the massive, immersive offsite (but we did go through the non-VR side, which you can read about it here) – we still felt like we were in the movie. Those who went through the full experience, complete with VR, have been raving about it ever since.

The Best Booth at San Diego Comic-Con 2017: Toddland

Toddland proves that you don’t need a Marvel-sized budget to have a big impact on the show floor. This year, they doubled the fun (and offerings) by having two sections to their booth, featuring a Bob’s Burgers restaurant with Bob’s SDCC exclusives on one side, and a Family Guy yard sale with Family Guy SDCC exclusives on the other. This is a company that gets how both Comic-Con attendees and fans think, and we’re all the better for it.

The Best Exclusive at San Diego Comic-Con 2017: Funko Pop! (Any or All)

Is there any company that has more exclusives than Funko? But it’s not just about quantity – the company also consistently releases the best, most sought after exclusives both on the show floor and off. Whether what you really wanted was at their booth, at the Pop! Up Shop, at Conan, or somewhere else – odds are high that you had at least one of their exclusive Pop!s on your must-buy list.

The Best Merchandise (Non-Exclusive) at San Diego Comic-Con 2017: Something I Bought That Was Really Cool

San Diego Comic-Con isn’t just about exclusives, no matter how much it can feel like that at times. No, there’s an amazing collection of artists, creators, writers, and more all over the show floor – as well as companies offering some of the coolest merchandise this side of the galaxy. No matter what you bought, we’re sure it was amazing, and we’re probably jealous.

The Best Swag at San Diego Comic-Con 2017: Conan Pop!

Two of our previous winners, Conan and Funko Pop!s, combine to create the best swag of Comic-Con: the free Conan O’Brien Funko Pop!s, which are given out for free at the Conan tapings. This year’s designs saw host Conan O’Brien re-imagined as The Flash, a Jedi, a Whitewalker, and as Spider-Man.

The Most ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Thing About San Diego Comic-Con 2017: Line Management

Of course, with every good thing, there must be a little bad – and this year’s true ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ winner (and not in a good way) goes to Comic-Con International itself, for its line management. Things reached an all-time low this year, with the line just to get inside on Thursday reaching 2-3 hours at one point in the morning, the lines for the ticketed exclusives and signings continuing to be nothing but chaos all week, and then, of course, whatever happened with the Saturday Hall H line. If there’s one silver lining here, though, it’s that CCI can no longer ignore at least the Hall H line, as they worked swiftly to provide a solution (even if you don’t agree with it). Will they even bother trying to improve the rest of the terrible line management in 2018, though?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

San Diego Comic-Con 2019 Dates Likely Revealed

If you’re still not recovered from San Diego Comic-Con 2017, we’ve got something this morning that might just make your head spin – likely dates for San Diego Comic-Con 2019. Yes, you read that right.

As first reported by An Englishman in San Diego, it’s very likely that we have San Diego Comic-Con 2019 dates: July 17-21, 2019.

For the last few years, the dates for future conventions have been quietly revealed on the San Diego Convention Center’s website, well ahead of an official announcement from Comic-Con International. Back in August, we shared 2018 dates, which were later confirmed by CCI last month (and for those who don’t already know: July 18-July 22, 2018).

And now, the Convention Center has quietly added a new entry that looks very familiar to SDCC attendees:

126,000 attendees (which is, interestingly, slightly below the usual 130,000 listed)? A Thursday-Sunday convention, in the exact same week as the convention was held in 2017 and will be held in 2018? Not much else that could be.

Historically, the San Diego Convention Center leaves off Wednesday’s Preview Night date from their calendar, which would set the convention at July 17-21, 2019 for all four and a half days.

Currently, 2021 is the last contracted year for San Diego Comic-Con to stay in, well, San Diego – meaning maybe Comic-Con is busy planning 2020 and 2021 dates as we speak.

Will you be checking hotel sites now? Let us know in the comments.

SDCC 2017 Recap: Funko Fundays Got (Most) of Its Magic Back

Let’s just make this clear: Funko Fundays is one of the best ticketed events at San Diego Comic-Con. Every year, Funko showers those lucky enough to score a ticket with an array of exclusive products, food, alcohol, games, entertainment, and more.

But it’s also not without its problems, and for every two steps forward it takes, it also seems to take a step back. So let’s start with what Fundays got right this year, then circle back around to what it got wrong.

Overall, the event was much improved from last year. While I am very pleased that Funko worked to solve many of the problems in 2015 (namely, table diving and almost-mosh-pits) — it also led to a bit of a lackluster event last year for me. Some of the magic just felt like it was gone, even if I understood the reasons why.

This year, when you arrived, just like always, you were greeted with smiling Funko employees who gave you your Mystery Box of Fun, which included three Funko Pop! figures — so right away, you enter the event feeling valued as a fan. New this year, they also gave you an envelope, which included things like your seat assignment (and more on that later), your two drink tickets, a game ticket, lanyard, and more.

Before the event officially kicked off, there was still plenty to do. You could redeem your game ticket to play three different games, which offered you chances to win cool prizes like Hikaris, Pop!s, keychains, and more. They also had a full spread of food, with options like sandwiches, burritos, fries, salads, desserts, and more (though if you’re looking for suggestions for 2018, Funko — it might be nice if the food stayed out even just 30 minutes after the event kicks off).

Then it’s time for the real show to start. The entertainment was much improved this year (give me anything but little people running around as Oompa Loompas any day of the week — let’s not do that again, Funko), and included a Harley Quinn dressed aerial dancer and a really impressive bit with “astronauts” creating artwork on stage, which combined to form a Freddy Funko astronaut figure. There was even a special appearance by Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes. I’m not sure if moving up about five tables from my usual spot really did make that much of a difference, but the sound system also seemed much improved this year, in that I could actually hear what was going on.

Funko also brought back using the event as a launching pad for several product announcements, much to the delight of the crowd. The “awards” portion of the night also seemed drastically reduced, in what we think was a smart move. Instead, the videos they played (including a look at an upcoming documentary) and photos they showed (with some really cool customs) were more geared towards celebrating the brand in general, while also being entertaining, without killing the momentum of the evening.

As the night progressed, each section won one prize — though the section which won the Kevin Smith Fatman’s far and away got the best of the bunch — as well as a prototype. It’s always nice to attend any event that wants to keep giving you prizes and keep you hyped. Which, essentially, is what Funko Fundays really is: It’s all about fueling the hype and the passion that fans have for Funko and their products. Even my friend who I dragged along, who doesn’t really collect Funko products, kept commenting how into the energy of the room she was — and by the end of the night, she was screaming and clapping her inflatable Bam Bams as loud as anyone. It’s a night for the fans. And also for cans of corn, but mostly for the fans.

Clearly having no fun.

That’s not to say the event wasn’t without its issues, though. While we can vaguely appreciate that Funko tried to make seating more organized this year, their system of distributing table assignment by envelopes with your table number was often frustrating. We witnessed several family members split up, either because whoever was handing out the envelopes wasn’t paying attention or because they didn’t have two seats left together by the end. At my own table, a father and son had different seat assignments, and they disappeared shortly before the festivities started — presumably to try to find a spot where they could actually sit together. We also know husbands and wives who weren’t able to sit together. None of that should happen, or even be a concern. We’re all adults here (okay, we’re mostly adults) — we can seat ourselves, I promise. It also didn’t really seem to stop gaps at various tables from happening, as we saw several spots (including at our own table) where people left at some point in the evening.

There was also a pretty major mishap at the end of the evening, when Funko CEO Brian Marriotti mistakenly announced that every Fundays attendee would be receiving “one of each” of their four Fundays exclusive Freddy Funko Fluxes. After the prize patrol delivered one total to the tables, rather than one of each, and the lights came on, everyone slowly realized that three additional Pop!s were not on the way. Obviously, it’s an exclusive Funko Pop!, and that’s awesome — but when you’re told you’re receiving four and only get one, a lot of people around us were understandably both confused and a bit disappointed.

By and large, though, Fundays is an event which celebrates its fans in the form of one of the best parties at San Diego Comic-Con. Is there room for improvement? Absolutely. But there’s a reason it’s one of the hottest tickets in town, and we’re excited to see what Funko does in 2018.

Did you attend Funko Fundays? Let us know in the comments.
