WonderCon Moving to Online Lottery System for Select Autographs – And What It Might Mean for San Diego Comic-Con

©2014 WBEI

Hold on to your butts.

We’ve been hearing rumors for awhile that Comic-Con International was looking into moving to an online-lottery system for select autograph sessions – and it looks like that’s exactly what’s happening, at least for WonderCon 2018.

Gone are the days where you’ll need to line up at an insane hour to score an autograph with your favorite stars of WB and Marvel TV shows (as well as a few others). Instead, in order to get autographs with stars of those series – and other “exclusive signings” – you simply need to log into your Member ID and click the “Exclusives” tab. You will only see this option if you have a WonderCon badge.

Once you’re in the portal, you can view all available signings. You are eligible to enter the lottery for any signing on a day which you have a WonderCon badge (so, if you don’t have a Sunday badge, you can’t enter Sunday’s autograph lotteries). You can enter starting right now through March 14, 2018 at 10AM PT. Attendees will be randomly selected on or around March 19, and then notified if they are a winner.

For those who are lucky enough to win entrance to a signing, you’ll need to bring a printed copy of your selection confirmation, and a photo ID.

Here’s an overview of the process:

Log into your Member ID and select the “Exclusives” tab.

Once you’ve found the autograph signing you want, you’ll click on the “Agree to the Terms and Conditions” box.

That will bring up another pop-up box, which you must click “OK” to.

To continue adding it, you’ll then click to “Confirm Interest”

Finally, you should be greeted by a screen that confirms your submitted exclusive signings:

The question on your mind now might be: What does this mean for San Diego Comic-Con? While nothing is official, we would be very surprised if Comic-Con International wasn’t using this as a test-run for an online lottery system for autographs at San Diego Comic-Con as well. After all, they also tested out RFID at WonderCon to work out many of the bugs before Comic-Con.

While we’re typically a bit anti-lottery-system here at the San Diego Comic-Con Unofficial Blog, in this case, we think it could be a very positive thing. Although the pool of individuals who request autograph signings is likely to balloon by moving it to an online-system, making your chances smaller, there’s little denying that the current system as it stands right now is broken. There’s an annual stampede and mass chaos along the back staircase for those trying for autographs in the Sails Pavilion. And for those who do wait 12-15 hours just to draw a ticket, there’s no guarantee you’ll be a winner, and won’t have wasted much of your day. An online-lottery system would eliminate a lot of the big unknowns and chaos of the current system, if implemented correctly.

And by implementing is correctly, we mean not just including those who do autograph signings with drawings traditionally held in Sails. The Marvel booth, AMC booth, and many of the studio booths are among the worst offenders, with exhibitors jumping into line long before general attendees step foot on the show floor. If Comic-Con is serious about fixing the autograph problem, it will include looking at the whole problem. Additionally, this could be implemented for the big exclusives, such as LEGO, Hasbro, Funko, and others.

We could be looking at a whole new convention experience in 2018.

How do you feel about the change? Let us know in the comments.

Marvel Comics Panels and Autograph Schedule for WonderCon 2018 Announced

Marvel fans making the pilgrimage to Anaheim this year are about to get very excited. Marvel Television released its WonderCon panels and autograph schedule today, which contains a lot of really interesting news.

Many fans were disappointed last year when Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. skipped SDCC, but it looks like they mean to make up for it at WonderCon this year with a Saturday panel.

But perhaps even more interesting than that, Marvel’s announcement today also comes with news of what looks to be a whole a new format for WonderCon autographs. According to their release:

Please note that the WonderCon online Exclusives Portal will launch on February 28th and at that time WonderCon Anaheim badge holders can log-in and create a list of exclusive signings they’d be interested in attending. On March 19th, WonderCon attendees will be selected at random and receive an email confirmation with more details.

So if you were in favor of moving to a lottery for autographs rather than skipping the long, long line-ups for autographs only to wind up unlucky – it looks like you might just be in luck. We’re also guessing that this could be a prototype for San Diego Comic-Con 2018.

From Marvel.com, here is Marvel TV’s WonderCon 2018 schedule:

Ace Parking San Diego Comic-Con Sale Set for Lottery Based System In 2018

You’ve got your San Diego Comic-Con badge (hopefully, anyway), you’ve got your sights set on a hotel (or maybe you already booked one) – but what about parking?

It’s a crucial piece of the puzzle for many attendees – although Comic-Con International offers a free shuttle to area hotels, and the city has the trolley and other public transportation options, the ability to have your own car in the vicinity, especially if you’re local, is crucial.

Ace Parking announced today that just like last year, parking lot assignments this year will utilize a lottery based system.

In order to be register, all you need to do is to fill out a form (one entry per e-mail address) sometime between the last week of March and April 23.

After that, a random drawing will be done to select the winners, who will then be divided into groups, with a new group gaining access to book their space each week (beginning with Group 1 on May 1). Normally, Ace Parking has put attendees into six groups – but this year, it simply states that this will continue “until all groups have had a chance to purchase their permits”, at which time the remaining inventory will open to the general public. Last year, parking did not sell out before it went on sale to the general public – so if you aren’t selected, don’t fear.

No word yet on which lots will be available in the sale, but last year’s lots included theHilton Bayfront, the convention center, 707 Broadway, Padres Parkade, Diamond View Tower, Gaslamp City Square, Tailgate Park, MTS, 610 W Ash, Cedar Gateway, 6th & A, Evan V.J. Park, Comerca Bank Building, the Civic Center, 6th and K Parkade, Park It on Market, and more. We’ll update as we get more information.

Ace answered some common questions about how the lottery will be run:

Q: Does the on-line system require me to set up an account to purchase my permits?
A: Yes. You will need to set up an account during the checkout process. Your account will enable system features such as the ability to print your permit in the future, and tie all purchased permits to a single barcode that you can carry on your smart device for use at scanner equipped lots. Your account will be available for future purchases for parking at next year’s Comic-Con and other events with the same barcode assigned to you which will be replenished with future permit purchases as they are made.

Q: Will the system allow me to purchase multiple permits per day?
A: No. Each account is restricted to one permit per day for Comic-Con. If you need to purchase more than one permit, you will need to set up multiple accounts.

Q: Is there a way to purchase Comic-Con permits other than online?
A: The only way you can purchase advance parking permits for Comic-Con from Ace Parking is through the online system. However, the majority of the lots included in the online sale and others that are not included will be available for drive-up parking the day of the event. Drive up availability will be first come, first served for the remaining spaces not reserved online. The lots are expected to fill up fast. If you are planning to find parking the day of the event, you should get there early.

Q: Can cars be parked overnight? Or just during the hours of the event?
A: Overnight parking is not permitted. The lots close at 2 am and reopen at 6 am (Convention Center opens at 5 am). They close so they can be prepared for the next day. Most lots are pre-sold to full capacity each day, so any cars on the lot after 2 am, will be towed at the owner’s expense.

Q: If I send in multiple entries from multiple email accounts that I own and win one of them, can I purchase my permit with any of the emails I registered with or only the one that won?
A: Only the one that won. Your winning email address must be registered in the account you are going to use to purchase the permits. The purchase process will require you to log into your account first and will validate your email address. If your email address matches one on the selected list, you will be given the option to purchase a permit at the lot your name was drawn for. If there is no match, the option to purchase a permit will not be available to you.

You can find more information on Ace Parking’s website.

Proceed with Caution: Comic-Con Attendees Experience Highs and Lows of Using Airbnb for Convention Lodging

Hotelpocalypse. The word alone strikes fear in the hearts of many San Diego Comic-Con attendees, as there simply aren’t enough downtown hotels to lodge the 130,000+ attendees who descend upon the Gaslamp Quarter and surrounding areas every July. Obviously, not everyone attending the convention needs a hotel or even wants to stay downtown – but with only 11,000 or so hotel rooms included in the downtown hotel block, it’s not difficult to see why thousands of people hoping to stay close to the convention center simply won’t be able to. And for those that do, the prices tend to run from $200-$400/night (and that’s after Comic-Con International has negotiated the rates down).

All of that means that many look “outside the system” to try to secure their Comic-Con accommodations, hoping to find some hidden venue which offers a sort-of-mystical check-list: Close to the convention center, reasonably priced (by Comic-Con standards anyway), big enough to fit your entire party, a hot shower, and the hope that you won’t be sharing space with a murderer. Sometimes, you’d settle just for the hot shower.

For many, that means turning to Airbnb, the short-term rental website which lets locals rent their home or a spare room out to visitors. Attendees often feel they’ve hit the jackpot when they can actually book rooms in the Gaslamp for Comic-Con week a year out at reasonable prices. Locals get a little cash on the side, and attendees get an alternative to the headache-inducing hotel sale. It’s win/win, right?

Sometimes. And sometimes, it’s not.

“I was excited about finding a great looking Airbnb in a reasonable price range,” David Schecter said of his experience in 2016. “The photos looked amazing and the host had really great reviews. I was also very close to the convention center. I thought then that I struck gold and didn’t need to deal with Hotelapocalypse and trying to get a hotel room.”

That all quickly changed, though, when the host cancelled Schechter’s reservation about a month before San Diego Comic-Con. Airbnb tried to help, but with only a few weeks to go before the convention, there weren’t many options still available. For his trouble, he got a $200 discount from Airbnb, and found a new Airbnb listing – that definitely didn’t live up to the original booking.

“The [new] room was underneath the house so it was extremely warm, and all we had was a loud fan to cool us down. The room was also so small I couldn’t stand up,” Schechter said. “I’ve learned not to use Airbnb during Comic-Con from other stories I’ve heard. I had a hotel during 2017, and I’ll have one during 2018.”

Of course, plenty of attendees have amazing experiences with Airbnb, including Tish A., who was a first-time attendee back in 2015 when she decided to try it out.

“Really, for me and my friend it was the path of least resistance,” Tish said. “After going through the General [Hotel] Sale crazy I decided to try Airbnb. I figured I would want to make the most of my time at Comic-Con and I also liked the idea of getting away from all the noise at the end of the day. Not to mention the prices seemed more in line with my budget.”

Her first experience with her Airbnb host went so well that Tish has stayed with the same host for the last four years. Although her host did raise prices last year, the host also reached out to communicate the change ahead of time. “They truly enjoy hosting and opening up their home,” Tish said. “To date they don’t seem to be in it for the money, per se. It’s something they really enjoy.”

That’s unfortunately not true for all Airbnb hosts. Although Airbnb policy head Chris Lehane told the Union-Tribune San Diego last year that “it’s pretty clear that our hosts don’t engage in gouging” and that when you look at big events “there’s maybe a $20 increase but not the type of gouging you’d see on the hotel end”, that isn’t true for many listings during Comic-Con.

Although you can still find some reasonably priced accommodations during Comic-Con, that’s often no longer the norm. In fact, on their site this week, Airbnb even labeled a one bedroom apartment downtown at $218 per night (which is as much as you’d pay for some of the downtown hotels offered through onPeak and CCI) as a “rare find”. There are other options, like this one, for $250 per night – but there are no photos of the actual space, making the decision to use Airbnb even more difficult.

The more disturbing trend may be just how high the rate increases go. There were several offerings listed at over $1,000/night – higher even than, say, a night at the Hilton Bayfront booked outside of the convention center block. Here’s a look at rates for several of the more expensive Airbnb listings during Comic-Con week, compared to similar weeks in July, which show that many are increasing their rates 3-10x as high as normal:

As many hosts realize that Comic-Con week is “worth more”, they’re often coming back to those who have already booked with them and either demanding more money, or canceling the reservation altogether.

In May 2017, Sandra S. booked a room through Airbnb – only to receive an e-mail a few days later from Airbnb’s support team telling her there was an issue with the pricing.  She had initially paid $343 for the reservation – but now the host was claiming that it had been listed at the wrong price, and that the listing was really $791.

“[She] pretty much doubled the price. I find the technical error hard to believe. I really believe that she realized that SDCC happened that week and tried to get more money out of me,” Sandra said.

Stephanie Taylor experienced a similar problem in 2015, when “the host cancelled two months before SDCC and demanded 5x the original rate”.

Taylor turned to Airbnb, whose initial response was to suggest a shared hostel bunk that was the same price as the original two-bedroom apartment. Eventually, they did offer a voucher as compensation for “a nice place” that was 2 miles away, but it still caused unnecessary headaches.

There’s no guarantee that Airbnb will step in, either. Last year, Elizabeth Keyes was initially excited about the prospect of Airbnb – it was further out from the convention center, but with a kitchen she could save on dining out, and she felt the rate was reasonable.

“Almost immediately after receiving my confirmation e-mail from Airbnb, I got a message from the host saying that there was an error with the system, and that the nightly rate would instead be $600 a night for our stay. He then told me that if I wouldn’t accept his adjustment, then I should cancel. After several calls with Airbnb, they ended up canceling my reservation. They offered me $200 credit to re-book somewhere else, but by the time this all got resolved, all apartments in the area were outrageous prices or not available for our full stay,” Keyes said. “I will never use Airbnb again for any type of large event since it was too easy for him to demand more money from us and Airbnb sided with him. It was not worth the headache of having to make multiple calls to support to get my money back.”

Sometimes, even when everything seems to be going right with an Airbnb booking, attendees can still be left feeling blindsided. Bryan Bowen thought he had lucked out by planning early and booking his Airbnb reservation in November the year before. He even e-mailed the host to verify the rates were accurate since it was during Comic-Con week, and was promised that they were correct.

“The listing seemed great. It was a block from the convention center [with a ] rooftop pool, with lots of room at a moderate price. It wasn’t cheap but was reasonable for what we were getting,” Bowen said. “About a month before SDCC I got an email from Airbnb saying my reservation was canceled with no real explanation at all. I emailed the owner and was told that the condo building would not allow short-term rentals. [The] funny thing is, I found it available for rent at three times what I had originally paid for the same dates.”

Airbnb didn’t offer to help Kimberly Lujan in 2017, when she booked an Airbnb and could never get ahold of the host. In June of last year, the booking was canceled, and Airbnb told Lujan it was a system glitch and not the host’s fault. With the convention only a month away, it was too late to find something comparable within the same price range, and although Airbnb did give her a refund, they still kept their service charge and made no offer of correcting or helping the situation.

Still, despite the risks, many still find Airbnb preferable to dealing with Comic-Con’s General Hotel Sale.

“It’s considerably cheaper than a hotel, especially when booking in high-expense living areas like California, and plus, you get way more space than you would compared to a hotel room,” Kyle F. said of his experience using Airbnb in 2017. “Although I only used it once specifically for SDCC, my wife and I have used it on many occasions when traveling. I highly recommend it.”

It can also be a good option if you have unique needs – like Ben Young, who was traveling to the convention with his entire family of six, including an infant. Going the hotel route likely would have meant a minimum of two hotel rooms, which would have made an already expensive convention experience cost even more.

“[I] got a house about 2 miles from the convention that worked great for my whole family,” Young said. “The price was less than a single bed hotel downtown. [It] wasn’t as convenient for the distance, but was great for the family and price.”

But with so many potential problems, Airbnb likely shouldn’t be your first option – there are simply better, less risky choices. But for those who strike out in the hotel sale, and feel they have no other alternatives, it can be a lifesaver.

“My trip in 2015 would not have happened if not for Airbnb,” Ryan Grosset said. “I have always been of the mind that unless I’m in the Gaslamp or right outside of it, I don’t go. Going with 2 newbies, one of them suggested getting one as a backup if the lottery fell through. Sure enough, it ended up being our home base, and a quick 5 minute Uber from the convention center.”

Even Grosset knows it’s all luck of the draw, though, as in 2016, he had the opposite occur – he couldn’t find an Airbnb host with reasonable rates to respond to him, but he wound up getting what he wanted from the hotel lottery.

If there’s any lesson to be learned with Airbnb, it’s basically that, like almost all other lodging options available to attendees, it’s a bit of a mixed grab-bag as far as what to expect. Some report nothing but wonderful things – some report back with horror stories. One said their host was so attentive they helped them schedule a massage to unwind from the stresses of the convention, while another said their host wouldn’t even give them a key, and made them call them each night just to be let in, leaving them worried they might not actually have a bed to sleep in that night.

When it comes to lodging for San Diego Comic-Con, it can sometimes feel like there truly are no good options – the Early Bird hotel sale may mean that you miss out on a closer option, the General Hotel Sale is a game of chances that could leave you with nothing, and Airbnb isn’t as regulated, which can lead to hosts canceling at the last minute with little repercussions and raising rates to levels that even the hotels closest to the convention center wouldn’t dream of asking.

If you do choose to go the Airbnb route, we recommend remembering the old adage: If it seems too good to be true – it probably is.

Have you booked with Airbnb for San Diego Comic-Con before? Let us know in the comments.

WonderCon Anaheim 2018 Exhibitor Map and List Released

With WonderCon Anaheim 2018 less than four weeks away, CCI has released the official list of Exhibitors that will be attending this year’s convention, along with information on fan tables, autograph, artist alley and small press areas — and the map of where you can find everyone.

There are over 450 exhibitors listed for WonderCon Anaheim 2018, covering comics, toys, merchandise, and more.

On the comics front, although Marvel and Dark Horse aren’t returning again this year, DC Entertainment, BOOM! Studios, Skybound, Valiant, and IDW Publishing will all be representing. You can also swing by GoDaddy ‘s Comic Book Hideout, whatever that might be.

The movie side is looking very light – with no major movie studios on the show floor, and virtually no presence unless you count DC Entertainment (which will surely have something to represent the upcoming Aquaman). Also absent? Capcom, who held down last year’s gaming representation.

Toy fans can stop by Fugitive Toys, UCC Distributing, Super7, Toynami, and Toy Wars to get their collectibles fix on. Powered by Funko, though, is off the grid for 2018 as it was in 2017 – and Kotobukiya also appears to be absent this year.

Many of our favorites, including Toddland, Hero Complex Gallery, Elhoffer Design, and The Ninjabot are must-stops when planning your exhibit floor plan.

Fans of Doctor Who and more will find something to like among the fan tables, with various fan clubs and cosplay groups among the list of Fan Tables. In addition, there are over 300 tables listed in Artists’ Alley (including CLAUS Studios aka Justin Harder, Brianna Garcia, and more) and over 100 attending in the Small Press area. There’s much to see at WonderCon Anaheim, and we haven’t even seen the panel schedule yet.

But having said that, while there never seem to be many vacant booths at the convention, a lot of the big players – including Marvel, Image, Kotobukiya, Capcom, and more – seem to keep leaving WonderCon, without other, large companies to replace them. As more conventions spring up, it gets harder and harder for the big companies to hit them all, which is part of what makes San Diego Comic-Con so special – they’re all there. There’s a reason we often refer to WonderCon as “San Diego Comic-Con lite”.

Check out the Toucan Blog for links to all the areas above, as well as a map of the Exhibit Floor for you to start charting your course for March 23-25.

What are you looking forward to most? Let us know in the comments.

San Diego Convention Center’s Upgrades Light Up San Diego

For many of us, the San Diego Convention Center is already one of our favorite sights – but it just got better.

Yesterday, on February 21, the San Diego Convention Center unveiled the latest in a series of upgrades to their iconic Sails Pavilion: LED colored lights (which change color and are visible across the Gaslamp Quarter and to Coronado Bay) that illuminate the newly renovated fabric roof.

From the San Diego Convention Center’s website, here’s a look at the new lights in action:

The Sails Pavilion debuted 28 years ago, but for a long time, had been slowly falling into disarray. The San Diego Convention Center has made repairing it, and some other much-needed areas, one of their top priorities of late though, with upgrades like a new concrete floor (which you may have noticed at SDCC 2017), new Hall H chairs (also in effect for SDCC 2017), new Ballroom 20 chairs (hopefully in time for SDCC 2018), and more.

“The renovation of the Sails Pavilion and the other important capital improvements taking place around the Convention Center have been a major priority for our Board of Directors,” Gil Cabrera, Chair of the San Diego Convention Center Corporation Board of Directors, said in a press release. “The work being done ensures we will remain the region’s premier gathering place. Each project improves upon our role as an important economic driver that will generate an estimated $1.2 billion in regional impact this year alone and provide $27.5 million in hotel and sales tax revenue to the City of San Diego.”

The San Diego Convention Center won’t be the only thing lighting up the San Diego night sky, though.

“I’m especially excited because this illumination of the Sails Pavilion is the first step in what will be a bay-wide illumination,” Rafael Castellanos, Chairman of the Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners, said in a press release. “That includes the lighting of the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge, lighting up what will be the new home for the San Diego Symphony on the waterfront and the Central Embarcadero.”

From Castellanos, here’s a look at the view inside:

Are you excited about the new San Diego Convention Center upgrades? Let us know in the comments.

SDCC Masquerade Entry Form and Rules For 2018 Announced

The Masquerade is one of San Diego Comic-Con’s most anticipated events, and for cosplayers hoping to be able to walk the stage in their finest, Comic-Con International today revealed details on the 44th Annual Masquerade. You can find the official rules and entry form on their site.

The event, to be held on Saturday, July 21 in Ballroom 20 at 8:30PM, draws a crowd of 3,900 attendees (with 2,000 more watching in Sails Pavilion and other rooms, which act as overflow). Just as in previous years, the Masquerade is free to participate in for anyone with a Saturday badge.

Contestants can enter as a single participant or in a group, and medallions will be given to the winners in the following categories:

  • Best In Show
  • Judges’ Choice
  • Best Re-Creation
  • Best Original Design
  • Best Workmanship
  • Most Humorous
  • Most Beautiful
  • Best Young Fan

Winners in the above categories will also receive a free 4-day badge to San Diego Comic-Con 2019 – which is a big prize in and of itself. In the event that a group wins, up to five memberships (up from four in 2017) will be given.

Entrants are also eligible for certain sponsored awards that various organizations choose the winner of, including:

  • Frank And Son Collectible Show, of the City of Industry, Calif., “Your one-stop show for all your collectible needs” will present to the entry they deem the audience favorite $1,000 cash, plus a very impressive trophy.
  • DC Comics representatives will present a special, limited edition DC Collectibles item to the finest costume entry
portraying a DC Comics character or group of characters from the DC universe of publications and movies.
  • The Costume Designers Guild IATSE Local 892: Celebrity Hollywood costume designer judges from the CDG
will present to their favorite entry a special prize, plus a CDG Masquerade trophy provided by Legacy Effects and a full
year’s subscription to Costume Designer magazine.
  • The David C. Copley Award for Most Innovative Costume: UCLA’s David C. Copley Center for The Study of
Costume Design will bestow on their favorite entry the UCLA Copley Center Design Award of a $1,000 gift card to
Amazon.com, plus a copy of Hollywood Sketchbook: A Century of Costume Illustration, (cover price $75) by Deborah
    Nadoolman Landis, Copley Center Director.
  • Sideshow Collectibles: Do you think your costume entry into this year’s contest will elicit lots of ooo’s and ahhhh’s
from the crowd? If that’s the case, you’ll be in the running to win a $350 gift card from Sideshow Collectibles for use on
their web site! So bring your best costume creation to Comic-Con’s Masquerade contest and you might walk (or strut)
away with Sideshow’s generously donated prize.
  • The Will Eisner Spirit of Storytelling Award commemorates Will Eisner’s contributions to the comics medium
and his imaginative storytelling skills as exemplified by his iconic comic character, The Spirit, and his many graphic
novels and textbooks. 2017 marked the centennial of Will Eisner’s birth and this award is bestowed by Will Eisner
Studios on the entry they deem best showcases that all-important “art of storytelling” in their stage presentation. The
costuming and story are equally important. At its peak, The Spirit Sunday comic newspaper section reached 5 million
readers and was known for its imaginative stories, creative artwork, and eye catching splash pages. The winning entrant
will receive $250 in Amazon gift cards plus limited-edition Will Eisner giclée lithographs.
  • Anime Pavilion, of Falls Church, Virginia, a source for all things anime and anime-related, will present to what they
choose as best anime-inspired costumes $200 credit at their popular Comic-Con Exhibit Hall booth or their expansive
website for their top choice, plus $50 cash to the best Young Fan anime-inspired entry.
  • Costumer’s Guild West, Inc. will be presenting a full scholarship and one night’s hotel (valued at $300) to their
weekend conference, Costume College®, held the last weekend in July at the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills,
CA, awarded to the entry their representatives select as showing the most promise. Costume College provides educational
lectures and workshops in every aspect of costuming. Please get more details at: costumecollege.net

You can find more information about the Masquerade on Comic-Con International’s website.

What do you think about the new rules? Let us know in the comments.
