Ninth Wave of Guests for San Diego Comic-Con 2018 Revealed

My emotional support doll I’ve been clutching since seeing Avengers: Infinity War tells me Comic-Con International announced another wave of guests. Since I’ve been weeping non-stop since seeing it, I’ll have to take its word for it.

Kevin Smith Returns to the American Comedy Co. with 3 Shows during SDCC & More!

The shows at the American Comedy Co. are always a good time, and the venue now has 7 events taking place during Comic-Con week. Naturally, three of these are with Kevin Smith, who always manages to have a crazy schedule at SDCC. Smith once again is bringing three of his podcasts along for live tapings, and tickets are now on sale to attend the shows.

Thursday night, on July 21, kicks things off at 8pm with Fatman on Batman, where Smith and TV and comics writer Marc Bernardin discuss movie, TV, and geeky news. Then, at 10pm, Smith and actor Jason Mewes return to the con to record another episode of Jay & Silent Bob Get Old, which has been ranked as #1 on iTunes’ Comedy Podcasts.

Finally on Saturday at 10pm, Smith and pal Ralph Garman bring the long-running Hollywood Babble-On to San Diego Comic-Con for another year of twisted, insightful commentary on Hollywood news.

Tickets to each of the three events are only $30, and are now on sale.

Also hitting up the American Comedy Co. are the previously announced Doug Loves Movies at 8pm on Wednesday, July 18, Brandon Wardell at 8pm on Friday, July 20, Mark Ellis at 10pm on Friday, July 20, and Ian Abramson at 8pm on Saturday, July 21. Tickets to these shows are $16-$18.

Our minds are racing just speculating about what will fill that massive gap in Hall H’s programming schedule. Kevin Feige says Marvel Studios Won’t Be in Hall H at SDCC 2018

There is some big news for Marvel fans regarding SDCC 2018. Unfortunately, it’s not good.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige dropped a bombshell during the press junket for Avengers: Infinity War. Feige stated that although Marvel will certainly have a presence at San Diego Comic-Con to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there will be no Marvel panels in Hall H this year.

Feige told ScreenRant:

“We’re going to do um, of course, Marvel will have a presence there. Marvel Studios will have a presence there only in that there will be 10th-anniversary materials and a 10th-anniversary panel. Not doing Hall H this year.”

There would be no shortage of content for a marvelous Hall H panel. There is currently massive buzz around Avengers: Infinity War, which releases this week. We also have Ant Man and the Wasp releasing just a few weeks before SDCC, not to mention Captain Marvel hot on both of their heels. With no D23 events this year, either, we’re left to speculate as to what presence, if any, Disney (who owns Marvel and Lucasfilm) will have in Hall H. With no Marvel Studios, no Star Wars for another year and a half, and Disney themselves skipping in general, it looks like the house of the mouse won’t be in Hall H at all.

This news certainly comes as a womp-womp for Marvel fans making their annual trek to San Diego. While the 10-year anniversary of the MCU is nothing to sneeze at, this means anyone who gambled on SDCC-exclusive trailers will go home empty handed.

SDCC 2018 Hotel Waitlist Set to Begin April 23

Hotelpocalypse is (almost) finally over.

E-mails with instructions about this year’s hotel waitlist – which will open on Monday, April 23 – are going out now.

Rooms from Hotelpocalpyse were allocated (supposedly, anyway) based on timestamp of when you entered the form to fill out your information, and then assigned in two groups, the last of which was this last Monday. Now, any rooms that have been returned will be opened up to a general waitlist.

Last year, only those who didn’t put down a deposit and who also requested to be placed on the waitlist were given e-mailed with waitlist instructions — so if you’ve already paid your deposit on your hotel, odds are you’re not upgrading.

On Monday, April 23, those eligible who requested to be on the waitlist will have the first opportunity to book from any remaining Comic-Con hotel inventory. On Monday, an email will be sent to those individuals, which will include the waitlist link. For those who choose to book, you’ll owe a deposit of two nights room rate plus tax, just like normal.

The waitlist sale is live inventory, and will be first come/first serve, so make sure to keep a close eye on your e-mail on Monday. No specific time for the waitlist sale has been announced, but we’ll update if that changes.

Under the Tents: Funko, FANDOM, Geeky Hooker, Symbiote Studios

Now that both phases of the Hotelpocalypse acceptance emails have gone out, we can focus on other, happier SDCC news. For instance, this issue of Under the Tents has great news from Kymera Press, Symbiote Studios, and more.

Here’s a look at what you might have missed:

• Kymera Press was having a blast at C2E2, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t thinking about San Diego. According to Twitter, they will be back in the Exhibit Hall at SDCC this year.

• We’ve been hearing many whispers, rumors, and innuendo regarding collectibles giant Funko and a glow-in-the-dark set that includes Lockjaw and Black Bolt from Marvel’s Inhumans. Stay tuned for more details and confirmation one way or another on this.

• Ravensdale Publishing had some news regarding their Villains and Henchmen project. They announced that a Kickstarter campaign will start on July 19, 2018, and they expect to promote and demo the game at San Diego Comic-Con.

• FANDOM has been searching for someone to fill their new role as Host for many of their events and videos. They found one in Clarke Wolfe, whose résumé includes work with Nerdist, Syfy, and more. She was also editor-in-chief of Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls. Look for her hosting FANDOM’s events at SDCC this year, most likely in the renamed “Experience at Comic-Con”.

• You know you’ve done it. We’re all guilty of it: finding that hidden spot where we can hug a wall to charge our phones, tablets, etc. We’ve all raged against the machine when told to move along, fire code, blah, blah, blah (don’t get us wrong; we like fire codes and want to keep everyone safe). Now, with the San Diego Convention Center’s recent upgrades, we’ll be huddling around new charging stations located around the lobbies. Yet another way to make new friends at SDCC.

Entertainment Weekly Wants You and a Guest to Party with Them at SDCC 2018

San Diego Comic-Con is one of the hottest tickets around in part because of the level of talent they’re able to draw to San Diego during the convention. And during the convention, one of the most coveted invitation-only events is Entertainment Weekly’s annual San Diego Comic-Con party – which you could attend.

The party draws actors, industry-insiders, and more. Last year, the guest list included the cast of Stranger Things, Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Andy Serkis, and many more.

For the last several years, EW has auctioned off a pair of tickets to their party for charity, which again this year is for GLSEN. However, they’re changing it up a little by running a contest. Omaze is offering thousands of chances to win two tickets to the epic Entertainment Weekly 2018 SDCC party being held Saturday, July 21, 2018.

If there’s one place to go during Comic-Con weekend, the Entertainment Weekly party is it. Last year’s guest list ran over two pages long, but a special name is being added this year… yours. I Have a Badge & Hotel for San Diego Comic-Con 2018 — Now What?

Yesterday, we posted our annual I Don’t Have Have A Hotel — Now What? post, to help the thousands who were shut out of the first two rounds of Hotelpocalypse placements.

But what if you’re on the other side of that predicament? If you already have a badge and do have a hotel or other sleeping arrangement already squared away — first of all, congratulations! You are one of the lucky ones, and you should feel good about that.

We’ve still got a long ways to go, though, and that means that there’s still a lot to get done between now and Preview Night. So let’s take a look at what’s coming up:

• Parking: Your immediate concern right now should likely be parking. You have between now and April 22 to fill out the online form (up to two entries per e-mail) to sign up for the parking lottery. New this year, you’ll also need to fill out your credit card information – though your card will not be charged. You can use the same credit card up to twice when signing up. After that, a random drawing will be done to select the winners, who will then be divided into groups, with a new group gaining access to book their space each week (beginning with Group 1 on May 1). Normally, Ace Parking has put attendees into six groups – but this year, it simply states that this will continue “until all groups have had a chance to purchase their permits”, at which time the remaining inventory will open to the general public.
• Exclusives: As we get closer to the convention, we will begin hearing big news about exclusives from the major companies. We already have a look at several exclusives from Hallmark and Cryptozoic, but you can also expect to hear news from companies like Hasbro, Mattel, Entertainment Earth, Factory Entertainment, Diamond Previews, the rest of Hallmark’s SDCC exclusives, and many others. Many companies will also hold pre-sales for their exclusives — so make sure you pay attention.
• Panels: Panel confirmations should be going out in just a few weeks. That’s always when we officially declare Comic-Con news season is “on”. Already, though, we’ve learned of several very likely panels, including Shadowhunters and Legends of Tomorrow. While the official Comic-Con schedule will come out July 5-8, many panels will be confirmed long before then.
• Offsite Announcements: We already have 15 different offsite events on our 2018 Comic-Con Offsite Calendar — and there’s going to be so many more still to be announced.
• SDConCast: A whole new season of SDConCast, our weekly podcast series, returns on May 8 at 6:30PM PT. We’ll have special guests, Q&A sessions with our readers, and of course, all the SDCC news we can cram into an hour-or-so-show, and opinions. We hope you’ll join us!

Warner TV Asia Wants to Fly You to San Diego Comic-Con 2018

It’s not often enough we get to pass on good news for international SDCC attendees, so when we do, it’s a rare treat. Attending SDCC is hard enough for those of us who live within the continental U.S.; it’s even harder for those who live overseas. With factors like time zone differences and extra long flights, international attendees are true die-hard SDCC fans who sacrifice (and spend) a lot just to get to America’s Finest City.

Warner TV Asia wants to make it a lot easier. They’re offering a chance for four pairs to fly from Southeast Asia to San Diego to attend San Diego Comic-Con 2018. The prize package includes airfare to and from San Diego (sorry, it’s only economy), a four-night hotel stay (no Hotelpocalypse!), and ground transportation from the airport to the hotel, hotel to the convention center, and hotel to airport for the trip home. The prize is valued at over US$40,000.

In order to be eligible, you must be at least 18 years of age and reside in one of the following countries:

• Hong King
• Singapore
• Malaysia
• Indonesia
• Thailand
• Vietnam
• Philippines

You can enter now on the contest website. Contest entries will be accepted from April 16, 2018 at 9PM (GMT +8)  to May 13, 2018 at 11:59PM (GMT+8).

Guide to Parking at San Diego Comic-Con 2018

Parking is the last major pre-convention hurdle for attendees leading up to San Diego Comic-Con. Whether you’re a local resident or not staying at a downtown hotel, where you park is very important.

Ace Parking (who owns most of the parking in Downtown San Diego) moved to a lottery based system three years ago, and that system is currently under way. You can sign up now through April 22 (and new this year: You must enter a credit card to prove you’re human, but the system will not charge you for signing up for the lottery) – and then on April 23, Ace will divide those who entered into six groups. Group 1 will be able to purchase parking beginning on May 1, and then each subsequent week, a new group will gain access to the system to purchase their permits. At the end of the group sales, the system will be opened to the general public.

If you are selected to be in one of the parking groups, you may notice that the system looks a little different than previous years — but we’re going to walk you through it.

On the day of the sale, you will log into your Ace account (which you will need to set up during the checkout process if you haven’t already done so). Here, you will have a list of all the available lots — ranging from the Convention Center to the Hilton Bayfront, and beyond. After deciding on your lot, you can click on the name to expand the list to see available dates and prices for that particular lot (Note: Listed availability and prices below are merely an example — they are not reflective of 2018 inventory).

Remember, though, that there is no overnight parking in any of the lots. These are the opening hours of some of the lots:

• Convention Center, Hilton Bayfront garage, Padres Parkade, Diamond View Towers: 5am – 2am
• Tailgate Park, Triangle, MTS: 5am – 2am
• 707 Broadway: 4pm on Friday until 6am on Saturday. Saturday 6am – 12am and Sunday 6am – 6pm. No overnight camping.

After deciding on the options you want, you will ticky them, and select “Add to Cart and Checkout” at the bottom of the screen.

This will immediately take you to your cart, which will show a recap of your purchases, along with the price with the added daily service fee.

At this point, you can check out by filling in some personal information and your credit card information.

After that, the only thing left to do is to print your permit, and enjoy.

ABM Parking is also currently selling pre-paid parking for several lots, available Wednesday through Sunday (though not all lots are available each day). Prices range from $10-$30 on Sunday, and the closest parking appears to be at Horton Plaza. However, if you don’t mind a short walk in exchange for getting your parking now, it’s certainly worth investigating. Also, a pro tip: After you click on the day you want, if you click to zoom out on the map, other options appear.

‘Legends of Tomorrow’ Likely Returning to San Diego Comic-Con 2018

While panel confirmations for this year’s San Diego Comic-Con have yet to go out (and won’t for a few weeks), information is slowly starting to trickle down about which network TV series might be in attendance. Last week, we got a sign that Freeform’s Shadowhunters will be returning to SDCC this summer — and now, it looks like Legends of Tomorrow will likely be joining it.

On a recent episode of Entertainment Weekly’s Superhero Insider radio show, EW chatted with Legends of Tomorrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim about Maisie Richardson-Sellers, who plays Amaya on the series.

While in this year’s season finale, Amaya left the Waverider to return to her village, Richardson-Sellers will be returning to the series. In discussing that, Guggenheim mentioned that, “I’m looking forward to a different storyline for Amaya next year. I think we’re going to announce – announce sounds really momentous. But we’ll reveal our plans for Maisie’s character at Comic-Con this year.”

While that isn’t set in stone — it was already very likely that Legends of Tomorrow would be back at Comic-Con this year. It’s already been renewed for a fourth season, and considering that Warner Bros. tends to bring all of their DCTV series to the convention, it’s a no-brainer.

I Didn’t Get A Hotel Room – Now What?

Many of you have heard about your San Diego Comic-Con 2018 hotel placement fate. Many of you… still haven’t, and onPeak has announced that round two e-mails are finished.

Here’s the good news: Comic-Con said that you would be alerted “no later” than April 23 about hotel waitlist options – and there’s always options on the waitlist.

However, if you’re already concerned that you’re going to have to sleep on the ground at Comic-Con (and not by choice) – fear not. You have other options.

So what are your next moves?

• Wait for More E-mails: As we said above, CCI promised that attendees would be alerted “no later” than April 23 if their hotel placement request was rejected. That means we may still get more hotel room e-mails between now and next Monday.
• Room Trade: One of the positive things about onPeak is that attendees have the option of changing the names on their hotel reservation, and it’s relatively painless. We recommend having the original owner of the reservation call if at all possible. But assuming you get through to a willing customer service rep (which is about 90% of them – usually if you get one unfamiliar with the process, just hang up, call back, and speak to someone else), this means that you can both give and receive any unwanted room reservations to someone who does want it, making two people happy. There are room swaps all over, but the biggest and most trusted is over at the Friends of CC forum. Don’t pay someone to “buy” their hotel room reservation from them, though. Ever.
• Cancellations: Some hotels will go back on sale. Deposits for these Round Two hotels are due by Thursday, April 19 at 11:59PM PT. Hotels (yes, even downtown hotels!) will be returned, as often, each roommate in a room will try for a hotel, and then if the group receives multiples, they can cancel the rest. Most of these will be Mission Valley options, but it’s a hotel, and it certainly beats sleeping on the sidewalk. Some of these cancellations may be e-mailed out next Monday with the rejection e-mails, and if not – there’s the Waitlist.
• Pray for Waitlist: For at least the last few years, onPeak/Travel Planners has opened up some returned downtown hotels to those who were on the waitlist, or who simply didn’t receive their top hotel picks. This will likely open up sometime on or after April 23
• Go Outside the System: So you didn’t get a hotel. You have other options that aren’t the Hall H line, we promise. Although downtown hotels basically want attendees’ first born in exchange for a room (the Hilton Bayfront has rooms starting at just $1500 a night, kids!), with a quick search we were able to find several motels in San Diego for under $300 a night. You won’t be spending much time there anyway. However, we strongly urge you to use caution if considering a room sharing system like Airbnb or VRBO — you can read the good, the bad, and the ugly of using Airbnb during SDCC over here.
• Accept Your Fate: If all else fails, if you at least have somewhere to stay — make the most of it. So maybe you’re in Mission Valley instead of the Gaslamp District. There are plenty of Comic-Con shuttles that run 24 hours, or you can even look into renting a car and buying parking. You now have a quiet hotel room to go back to, twice the dining options, and you can still hang around downtown as much or as little as you want. Getting that perfect downtown hotel isn’t the be-all/end-all of the Comic-Con experience, and it only means you won’t have a good time if you let it mean that. Now start planning the fun stuff.

Seventh Wave of Guests for San Diego Comic-Con 2018 Revealed

Right now, you’re probably frantically refreshing your email to see if the onPeak powers that be have smiled on you. Unfortunately, there’s nothing we can do about that. What we can (and love to) do in the meantime is talk about some happier Comic-Con news: Who you’ll be seeing there.

Her Universe Brings Style to SDCC for Fifth Annual Fashion Show; Adds Junior Fashion Competition

Ashley Eckstein’s popular geek-themed clothing line, Her Universe, and Hot Topic are returning to San Diego Comic-Con this summer to bring a little extra style to the event. The two companies are once again teaming up for the 5th Annual Her Universe Fashion Show. New this year, there will also be a junior component to the competition, sponsored by Cartoon Network.

The annual event pairs fashion and fandom, offering budding designers the chance to show off both their designing skills as well as their pop culture loves. Last year’s event featured designs inspired by everything from Marvel, Disney, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and much more.

For 2018, amateur fashion designers will once again be able to submit their pieces, inspired by geek culture, to compete for a chance to show off their final designs in the live show, set to take place in on Thursday, July 19 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel (no time announced, but odds are high it will be at 6PM).

Finalists will compete at the live event, with the winner(s) being selected to be a guest designer with Her Universe to develop a collection to be sold at Hot Topic. Submissions are being accepted through April 27, and the top contestants will be selected and notified by May 4.

For the junior competition — which will also take place at San Diego Comic-Con on July 19 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt Hotel — those between the ages of 5-17 can submit ready to wear fashion based off Carton Network’s The PowerPuff Girls. Submissions must also be submitted by April 27.
