San Diego Comic-Con Costume Props Policy Updated for 2017

There’s been a lot of speculation about how, or if, Comic-Con International would be changing their costume prop policy this year, particularly after an incident at Phoenix Comicon where a man was arrested carrying multiple guns and knives was arrested, and all costume props were banned (at least temporarily).

However, it’s good news for cosplayers at San Diego this year, as CCI has taken a different approach. The main change this year? They’ll be adding a second Costume Props Desk near the outside door in the lobby of Hall C2. This change should help both ensure that no costume prop is left un-checked, and that cosplayers aren’t waiting in lengthy lines.

As in years past, no functional props or weapons are allowed — and all costume props must be inspected at one of the two Costume Props Desks (the other one is located in the lobby of Hall E). Costume swords must be tied to your costume in a way that they can’t be drawn, but it doesn’t mention anything about the zip-ties that were being used for several days last year for all costume props.

Here’s the full updated Costume Props Policy, which you can find on CCI’s site:

No functional props or weapons are allowed at Comic-Con. Simulated or costume weapons are allowed as a part of your costume, subject to prior approval by security and compliance with the following:

• All costume props and weapons must be inspected at the Costume Props Desk, located near the outside door in the lobby of Hall E.
• New for 2017: A second Costume Props Desk has been added near the outside door in the lobby of Hall C2.
• All costume props and weapons must conform to state and federal law.
• Projectile costume props and weapons must be rendered inoperable.
• Functional (real) arrows must have their tips removed and be bundled and zip-tied to a quiver.
• Costume swords must be tied to your costume in such a way that they can’t be drawn.
• Costumes featuring stilts must be approved at the Costume Props Desk.
• At certain times, due to crowds and safety issues, people in oversized costumes may be asked to leave the Exhibit Hall.
• After your costume props have been checked, they will be tagged by security, and you will be given a wristband to wear to designate that your props have been checked.
• Security will escort you to the Costume Props Desk for inspection if your costume prop is not tagged.

If you do not want to have your costume props inspected or tagged, or if you are not willing to comply with these policies, please do not bring your costume props to Comic-Con. All costume props and weapons must be inspected at the Costume Props Desk.

What To Expect: SDCC Preparation for July 2017

It’s now July, and that means that we can officially state that San Diego Comic-Con is this month. Are you prepared? Well, alright, no one is probably ever completely prepared, but your best option for ensuring you make the most of the behemoth that is Comic-Con is keeping up with the important news. But don’t worry! We’ve got you covered.

Here’s what you can expect over the next month:

Panel Schedule

Traditionally, this schedule is released exactly two weeks before the convention, which should mean that we won’t get a peek at the full, official schedule until July 6-9 — but with panel confirmations coming in left and right, we already know a good chunk of the full schedule. You can find all of the panels that we know about currently – which is over 175 – over at our master list of Announced Panels.

Exclusive Announcements

Oh, did you think there couldn’t possibly be that much left to reveal for exclusives? How wrong you are, my friend. July will be another onslaught of exclusives, with more still to come from Hasbro, Mattel, and Funko (including how their line will work – but you can read what we know about that situation here), as well as LEGO, Marvel, tokidoki, Super7, the BBC America booth, IDW, Nickelodeon, The Loyal Subjects, Mondo, and so many more.

Autographs

While we know hundreds of panels – we have barely scratched the surface when it comes to autographs. Our annual list of Announced Autograph Signings compiles them all (including, so far, The Walking Dead, Marvel, Voltron, Hermes Press, and more!), and will be updated daily until right before the con.

Offsite Announcements

Expect this to be a big, big month for San Diego Comic-Con offsite announcements. We’re still waiting on more news about this year’s Conival and the Game of Thrones and Westworld offsites, plus more information about the Syfy/Nerd HQ dance parties. Then, of course, there’s anything else that might pop up! Plus, there’s still all the big players, like the Petco Interactive Zone, Adult Swim, Syfy tickets, and yes, yes – those darn Saturday Conan tickets.

Although the new season of the SDConCast is already in full swing, we have an exciting last few episodes coming up for you. Join us on Friday, July 7 and Sunday, July 9 for our annual Breaking Down the Panel Schedule podcasts. Finally, we’ll have our last show on Wednesday, July 12 to cover anything else that gets announced just before the convention – and we have a big surprise for our final guests. Then you won’t see our smiling faces again until we’re actually at the convention. Ahhhhh.

Ninjabot Reveals San Diego Comic-Con Exclusive Print; Opens Pre-Orders

Our friends at Ninjabot: The Art of Arnel Baluyot have been busy preparing for San Diego Comic-Con, and they’re finally ready to unveil their plans.

This year, they’ll have an Alien San Diego Comic-Con Limited Edition Exclusive Print, which features a Xenomorph and the film’s tag line, “In Space No One Can Hear You Scream”. It’s a very small run of only 50 and available for $50 — and best of all, for the first time, you can pre-order it now for pick-up at their booth (Small Press L-08). Each 13″x19″ print is hand-signed and numbered.

They’ll also have a 13″x19″ Alien San Diego Comic-Con Exclusive Embellished Print available, which features hand embellishments and is embossed. The variant is an even smaller run, with just 20 prints available, and each print comes hand-signed by the artist and numbered — and it retails for $100. Just like with the regular edition, you can pre-order it for pick-up at the con now.

All pre-orders must be picked up no later than Sunday, July 23 at 3:30PM — and while you don’t have to pre-order, these prints will sell out, so pre-ordering ensures that if you only have a one-day badge, you’re guaranteed your order.

Ninjabot also announced that their new Origin Series III prints — which is set to debut at San Diego and features artwork based on the classic origin series of a multitude of superheroes — will be available for pre-order for pick-up at the convention beginning July 10 at 10AM PT (and will end on July 15 at 11:59PM PT). While it’s not yet available, they did offer up a sneak peek at one of the prints:

 

To celebrate all of this news, Ninjabot is launching a contest today — with a winner getting to choose between a set of Baluyot’s awesome Star Wars buttons (which you can find here — and pick up at the show, for free!) and/or their Alien Limited Edition print. They’ll be launching the contest later today, and all you have to do is find the correct post and then Share/Follow/Like/Tag/RT/etc. the post on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. You’re able to enter once per social media, per day.

Sideshow San Diego Comic-Con 2017 Exclusives [UPDATE July 1]

Sideshow, the makers of high-end collectibles for some of your favorite licenses, are always one of the most exciting booths at San Diego Comic-Con. This year, they’re back at the con, and they’re bringing several exclusives – which you’re sure to want to break open your piggy bank for.

Last year, they offered  on-site pick-up for their exclusives, and while there’s no official word on if it will work the same, they are doing pre-orders again, so it would seem likely.

Let’s take a look at this year’s offerings:

[UPDATE July 1] 

Sideshow revealed another convention exclusive heading to San Diego Comic-Con this year: Iron Man Mark XLI – Bones (Retro Armor Version). The Hot Toys figure is based on Bones, Tony Stark’s Skeleton Suit that’s part of his House Party Protocol. Bones has the special function to split its armor pieces apart and fly separately, making it the most versatile suit.

Sideshow and Hot Toys have created a “Retro Armor” inspired take on the Skeleton Suit and given it the classic Iron Man red-and-gold finish. The Sixth Scale Figure features over 36 points of articulation, LED light-up functions, a specialized dynamic figure stand, and comes with three pairs of interchangeable hands.

The figure first launched at the “Marvel Age of Heroes Exhibition” in Tokyo, Japan — but you can also score it now at San Diego. The figure retails for $300, and you can pre-order it now for pick-up at the convention.

[UPDATE June 28]

Sideshow is bringing a few artists to hand sign their exclusive prints at SDCC. The Premium Art Prints shown below will be Artist Proofs, not the regular print edition already available. Artist Proofs are a special, industry-recognized subset of a limited edition. They are typically limited in quantity to 10-15% of the main editions, and traditionally reserved exclusively for the artists. However, the artists have agreed to make these highly sought-after Artist Proof prints available to the public, and will appear at the Sideshow booth to meet with fans and hand sign the prints in person.

Pre-orders for the SDCC Exclusive Artists Proofs are open now, but the prints will only be available for pick-up by con attendees during or after the artist signing events at the Sideshow booth, #1929.

Sideshow also revealed they will be bringing an shared exclusive sixth scale figure, the Iron Man Mark XXIII – Shades figure from Hot Toys. You can pre-order this figure now for pick-up during the convention.

[Previous] Sideshow’s first San Diego Comic-Con exclusive is a Prime 1 Studio’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Bust (Blue Version). The 10.6″ bust (that weighs 24 pounds!) is limited to 500 pieces and includes an interchangeable portrait (go from grimace to less-grimace!), and retails for $300. It’s available for pre-sale now for pick-up at the con.

Disney XD Announces San Diego Comic-Con 2017 Panels

As previously announced, everyone’s favorite Uncle Scrooge is heading to San Diego Comic-Con (along with cast members David Tennant, Danny Pudi, Ben Schwartz, Kate Micucci, and Beck Bennett) — but that isn’t all that Disney XD is bringing to the convention.

Attendees will also find a panel on Friday, July 21 from 2:15PM-3:15PM for Star Vs The Forces of Evil and Milo Murphy’s Law, as creators for both series discuss what’s next.

Then on Saturday, July 22 — at a time still to be announced — the creators of Pickle And Peanut and Future Worm will give fans an exclusive peek at Pickle‘s second season.

Friday July 21 (2:15PM – 3:15PM) – Star Vs The Forces Of Evil/Milo Murphy’s Law

Creators of Disney XD’s hit series Dan Povenmire, Jeff Swampy Marsh and Daron Nefcy will discuss the process of making both hit shows.

The panel will feature voice actors David Tennant (who voices Scrooge McDuck), Danny Pudi (Huey), Ben Schwartz (Dewey), Kate Micucci (Webby Vanderquack), and Beck Bennett (Launchpad), along with Executive Producer Matt Youngberg and Co-Producer/Story Editor Francisco Angones. The panel will feature exclusive sneak peeks and talk about bringing this classic family of adventuring ducks to a new generation of fans.

Saturday July 22 (Time TBA) – Pickle And Peanut/Future Worm!

Creators of Disney XD’s big comedy series Noah Z Jones Joel Trusell & Ryan Quincy will discuss what is the process of making comedies for all people also viewers will see a exclusive peek to Pickle And Peanut Season 2!
