San Diego Comic-Con Tops San Diego Convention Center’s Economic Impact Generators List
There’s talk of reviving the long-talked-about San Diego Convention Center expansion with a potential push for November’s ballot — and one of the best cases for such a project is that it continues to attract some huge names (including not only San Diego Comic-Con, but also a slew of medical conferences in 2018), which bring with them money, jobs, and a huge tourism boost to San Diego.
The San Diego Convention Center Corporation has posted their 2018 regional impact forecast for all of the conventions that the San Diego Convention Center hosts, and they’re predicting to generate $1.2 billion in total regional impact this calendar year (up from $1.1 billion estimated in 2017).
Of the 108 events scheduled for 2018 – with the possibility of more to be added – San Diego Comic-Con is by far the biggest performer, estimated to have a regional impact of $147,100,000 in 2018 (up $4 million from the 2017 forecast). The next biggest regional economic performer is the Society for Neuroscience, which is estimated to bring in $88,800,000 to the region.
That $147.1 million is shy of the San Diego Workforce Partnership’s $160,000 – $180,000 million economic impact estimation from November 2014, but it’s still a huge boost for the city. It’s also possible that this study isn’t taking into account the few thousand people who flock to the city every year during the convention for other, offsite events, even without a Comic-Con badge.

With SDCC’s current contract with the San Diego Convention Center only set through 2021, and lots of recent setbacks in any expansion plan, findings like this one are important for helping to prove to San Diego at large that Comic-Con is worth fighting for.

Chris Hardwick Getting the Funko Treatment at San Diego Comic-Con 2018
Chris Hardwick is already one of the busiest people at Comic-Con, but in 2018, he’s going to be even more prevalent.
Late last month, those watching Hardwick on Talking Dead were in for a special surprise: The announcement that if they logged onto his id1ot’s website, they could grab one of only 1,000 copies of a special limited Chris Hardwick Funko Pop!. These sold out almost instantly – with some technical issues – but the apology that followed included some very interesting news.
In an e-mail sent to those who were charged only to have their order canceled, users were told that a Chris Hardwick Blood Spatter edition “is going to be part of Funko’s exclusive San Diego Comic-Con 2018 line, which makes it additionally special”. While it’s not yet known if these will be available at other retailers like Hot Topic or Gamestop, they will at least be available to id1ot users who had technical difficulties, at a $5 off discount.
Additionally, Hardwick revealed that “the plan is that [he] will do a signing at the Funko booth” at SDCC.

This marks the second Funko Comic-Con exclusive to be revealed, with Funko having already confirmed a Riverdale Josie is in the works for SDCC.

Under the Tents: Ballroom 20 Chairs, Wayward Cocktails, Geeky Hooker, Eisner Awards, Kymera Press
It’s officially 2018 – which means that it’s time to start getting serious about this year’s San Diego Comic-Con (yes, this year‘s! Only 195 days to go!).
Luckily, December didn’t just bring a badge sale, it also brought plenty of news. We’ve got word of an upgrade for the Ballroom 20 chairs, news on offsites, exhibitors, crocheted critters, and so much more.
Here’s a look at the news you might have missed:
- Let’s start with potentially the biggest, and most exciting, news of 2018: It looks like Ballroom 20 is getting new chairs! San Diego Convention Chair Gil Gabrera promised “more improvements” coming to Ballroom 20 in 2018, and gave a pretty good indication that the improvement is, well, new and improved seating. Although Ballroom 20’s chairs were nowhere in need of the makeover that Hall H’s were (which, thankfully, were replaced in 2017) – new chairs mean a more comfortable environment, and a welcome reprieve after a long night on the cold, hard concrete.

- While details are scarce – one of attendees’ favorite offsites looks like it will be returning: the Supernatural themed Wayward Cocktails, hosted by the Supernatural Wiki. They shared that they’re busy planning a “massive” party for 2018 – so break out the Purple Nurples.

- And speaking of well-loved Comic-Con traditions returning: everyone’s favorite Geeky Hooker has been busy creating some brand new crochet critters for you to. 2018’s roster includes Thor Ragnarok’s Hela, a mini-Justice League comprised of Batman, Superman, and The Flash – as well as a pocket-sized porg, with many more still to be announced. Just like always, if you want to claim one for your own at Comic-Con, you can follow along with her “drops” on either Twitter or Facebook.
- Christopher Reda will be exhibiting at Small Press Booth M-11 at Comic-Con this year, where you’ll be able to score his graphic novel Zombie Zero.

- Artist Sean Forney is returning to Comic-Con in the new year, and as always, he’ll have commissions available – with details announced at a later date.
- Artist Daniel Danger, of Tiny Media Empire, will also be exhibiting at SDCC in 2018.

- You’ll also find Corey Brotherson on the show floor, where he’ll be selling Deadlier Than and Magic of Myths, as well some new books.
