Artist Patrick Ballesteros is all about making you remember your inner child – with kid-ified takes on everything from retro classics like Indiana Jones and 16 Candles, to more modern favorites like Game of Thrones and Guardians of the Galaxy.

That’s why it’s only fitting that Ballesteros’ final WonderCon exclusive will make you remember the joy (and sorrow, dammit, Disney!) of Coco with “Skeleton Crew”. The piece features Miguel, Héctor, and Mamá Imelda riding atop a mechanical Ernesto de la Cruz, in the latest of his 25 Cent Wonders collection.

 

The 6″x8″ print is limited to only 75 pieces for WonderCon, so it’s sure to go fast. You can pick it up at WonderCon Anaheim 2018 at Artist Alley A-07 for $15 – but hurry, as this one is sure to go fast, and will be nothing but a fading memory very soon.

Under the Tents: Chris Hardwick, The Geeky Hooker, Terry Moore, Funko, Star Trek

Now that our fearless editor-in-chief, Kerry Dixon, has officially declared SDCC off-season over, you can expect more juicy San Diego Comic-Con news to come in the near future. Let’s get things rolling with this issue of Under the Tents, where we bring you exciting news from The Geeky Hooker, Chris Hardwick, and a lot more.

Here’s a look at the news you might have missed:

• We reached out to talented artist Edwin Huang to see if we would find him at SDCC this year. We were happy to see that he will indeed be tabling at the UDON Entertainment booth this year, and even better, he’s also taking pre-commissions if you email him at edwin@edwinhuang.com. Huang sent us some teasers of what he’s currently working on, but if you’d like to see more, you can find his work on his website, or you can follow him on Twitter.

• While Chris Hardwick may seem like the busiest person ever, he assured one fan recently on Twitter that he could have even more pans in the frying pan than he already does. So while he doesn’t attend every event, he tweeted that he would be at SDCC. Now, the only question is, which panels will have him as moderator?

• Artist Gary Pullin announced via Twitter that he will be exhibiting at SDCC once again this year alongside fellow artist N.C. Winters.

• Eisner nominated artist Sara Richard is already hard at work getting ready for San Diego Comic-Con this year.

• Beefypoo posted another sneak peek at their latest plushie, Kyubipoo. Not impressed? You can vote on which other plushie they bring with them to SDCC. Will you choose Shiny Snorlypoo or Shiny Gangapoo?

• When toy giant Funko held their Twitter Q&A, inquiring minds on Twitter wanted to know when their Bat Pop! collection would grow. According to Funko’s response, we’ll have something to look forward to in that area at SDCC this year. Will it be Red Hood?

• Have you ever imagined the worlds of Wicked and Harry Potter coming together to form an epic musical? If so, then you’re probably one of the minds that came up with Wicked Wizards: A Potter Parody. If you’re like the rest of us who thinks that’s a mash-up they’d love to see, the Turning Tydes performing troupe will be performing it at the Lyceum Theatre during SDCC.

• What’s a UTT without crochet? Our good friend, The Geeky Hooker, was inspired by Netflix’s new The Punisher series for her latest critter. As always, you’ll need to follow her on Twitter or Facebook to see where she drops it for you.

• If you remember SDCC 2016, you remember it was all about Star Trek and its 50 year anniversary. One of the offsites celebrating this was Star Trek: 50 Artists, 50 Years, an exhibit celebrating the franchise’s 50-year journey. Now, the art from that exhibit is going up for auction from Heritage Arts. Bidding on these pieces will begin on March 27.

• Artist Terry Moore was pleased to report that the hi-res cover for his book Strangers in Paradise will be ready in time for SDCC. We’ll have to follow his tweets to see what else he has in store.

BOOM! Studios Unveils WonderCon 2018 Exclusives, Signings

Some WonderCon Discounts for Disneyland Excluded During Convention

If you’re going to WonderCon and want to head to The Happiest Place on Earth, you might want to read the fine print.

Comic-Con International has a great history with offering attendees discounts during WonderCon, with specially-priced tickets being offered this year to Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, and even Cirque du Soleil – Luzia.

However, for the first time in our recollection, at least, the Disneyland tickets require a bit of further investigating. While the discounted 1-day and multi-day theme park tickets are eligible for use during WonderCon tickets, it appears that the Twilight Tickets (which are the cheapest option, and allow the user to enter the theme park after 4PM or four hours before park closing, whichever is earlier), is blocked out March 23, 2018 – April 7, 2018. That means you won’t be able to use it during the actual dates of WonderCon.

If you already purchased a Twilight Ticket, hopefully you’ll be in the Anaheim-area some other time during the year, when you’ll be able to use your tickets. And for those of you who haven’t purchased yet, but would like to – hurry, as the CCI “ticket store” closes at 9PM PT tonight.

We’ve reached out to Comic-Con International for comment, but as of press time, have not heard back.

IDW Announces WonderCon 2018 Exclusives, Signings

If you’re trekking to Anaheim this weekend to attend WonderCon, you’ll want to visit local San Diego publishers IDW, especially if you’re a fan of Sonic: The Hedgehog. IDW is hosting Sonic’s author, Ian Flynn, who will have signings for Sonic #1 at Booth #1109 all weekend long (see their complete schedule below).

Not a Sonic: The Hedgehog fan? Not a problem. IDW is also premiering the fourth and final of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Tempest at WCA this year.
