Welcome to Anaheim Comic-Con 2017 – WonderCon Gets A New Name (Sort Of)

WonderCon Anaheim will be going under more changes in the next year or so than just the continued construction on the Anaheim Convention Center expansion — it’s getting a name change. Well, sort of.

In this weekend’s souvenir guide, an article formally introduces “Anaheim Comic-Con” — which isn’t replacing the name WonderCon Anaheim, but rather, co-existing with it. We’ll just let CCI’s own words explain:

…it’s still WonderCon Anaheim. But through the years, we’ve learned that not everyone realizes that the people behind Comic-Con International in San Diego are also responsible for WonderCon — so we hope “Anaheim Comic-Con” will make that more obvious. The name isn’t being replaced, but we will use both as needed to help people understand what the show is all about.

So, you can probably expect to start seeing the name Anaheim Comic-Con in some branding efforts for the convention, but it’s not yet clear how much it will be used in place of the WonderCon name — or if this is part of a longer-term plan to transition away from the WonderCon name entirely. Time will tell.

This isn’t entirely new, of course. The header on their website for WonderCon even lists “Anaheim Comic-Con” underneath the WonderCon trademark. But this is the first formal announcement we’ve seen about attempting to re-brand the name as something more easily recognizable with the rest of CCI, which could imply they plan to tackle the branding issue more seriously. Or maybe they were just short an ad page in the souvenir program.

Either way, make sure you’re following along on Twitter this weekend with @SD_Comic_Con and @ParksAndCon all weekend for coverage for WonderCon Anaheim, Anaheim Comic-Con, or as we like to call it, “Not another hashtag.”

What do you think of the new name? Let us know in the comments.

Thanks to @ParksAndCons for the coverage.

However, there is some good news to be found – attendees will instead beiZombie season 3 premiere in that Friday 3:30PM Arena timeslot.

  • Gallery Nucleus is always doing exciting things – and you’re going to definitely want to swing by Booth #2102 to grab an array of prints and pins they’ll have available for sale. You can also stop by on Saturday from 2PM-3PM for a signing with artist Jisoo Kim, or Sunday from 12PM-1PM for a signing with artist Alex Ahad. Here’s just some of what they’ll have available:

You can look forward to seeing  stars Cory Michael Smith, Erin Richards, Jessica Lucas, Drew Powell, and David Mazouz.

  • Go old school with Capcom this weekend, as they bring their Disney Afternoon Collection to WonderCon. You’ll get to play two of the upcoming games from that collection, including the original 8-bit DuckTales or Chip ‘n Dale Rescue Rangers – and you’ll even get to walk away with a slap bracelet. I mean, come on. You can also play games like Ulta Street Fighter II on Nintendo Switch, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, and Street Fighter V – as well as Resident Evil 7 biohazard. Under the Tents: Funko, Her Universe, House of Blues, Hollywood Science Fiction Museum

After months of waiting, CCI finally announced the date for Open Registration as April 8. Hopefully, you’ve read our Open Registration Visual Guide. If not, we definitely recommend it. Maybe you’re one of those lucky ones who scored badges at Returning Registration this year. Either way, while you’re gathering your resources for Open Reg or just gathering a hot cup of coffee, we’ve found some more SDCC 2017 info to help you fill out that spreadsheet.

Here’s a look at the news you might have missed:

  • Who doesn’t like a good SDCC party? If you’d like to host your own, House of Blues San Diego has open dates at their 5th Avenue venue. They’ll even plan your party for you, so all you’ll have to do is show up and have fun.

Instagram Photo

  • Winter may never really come to San Diego, but Comic-Con certainly does. Cosplay Photoshoots would like to hold a Game of Thrones-themed cosplay photo shoot either July 21 or July 22. The exact location isn’t quite nailed down yet, but it will either be at Petco Park (where Nerd HQ used to be located) or the New Children’s Museum (where Nerd HQ has been located in 2015 and 2016). They’re soliciting input from anyone interested on their Facebook Event.

  • The Hollywood Science Fiction Museum, which is undertaking the herculean task of restoring the former Hollywood Wax Museum’s USS Enterprise Bridge Set and original crew wax figures, will be at SDCC again this year. You can support this project by donating to their Kickstarter here.

  • The Her Universe Fashion Show, which has been a huge success at SDCC, will happen again in 2017. If you’re going to WonderCon this weekend, you can find out more at their panel.

  • OK, Trekkies, the Hollywood Science Fiction Museum needs our help to restore its Star Trek wax figures and bridge set. They’ll have the bridge set with Mr. Spock and Dr. “Bones” McCoy on display at WonderCon, with the rest of the cast to be displayed in the touring exhibit. You can donate to their Kickstarter campaign here.

They’ve also announced via email to their Kickstarter contributors that they’ll have Denise Crosby, LT Tasha Yar and CDR Sela from Star Trek: The Next Generation, War of the Worlds star Ann Robinson, and Farscape actress Gigi Edgely there as well.

  • Valiant is going to have the busiest booth in the convention center. If you visit Booth #1019, you’ll find paperbacks and hardcovers with titles including Bloodshot Reborn, Britannia, Divinity, Faith, Ninjak, X-O and Woody, and many more. If that’s not enough, they’ll also have t-shirts and all-star signings. Don’t miss this one.
  • Mark (budgetdude) has 10 signed prints from artist Natali Sanders. Yes, you read that right, only 10. If you want one, you’ll need to get to Booth #701 fast.
