Report: ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ Won’t Be at San Diego Comic-Con 2017

For months, everyone has speculated that D23 being right before San Diego Comic-Con meant that Disney and its related properties wouldn’t be hitting San Diego as hard (or at all). While Marvel will be back in Hall H again this year, for anyone hoping for a Star Wars panel — we’ve got bad news for you.

As io9’s Germain Lussier reported on our podcast earlier this weekStar Wars: The Last Jedi won’t be getting a panel at San Diego this year. Just as with An Englishman in San Diego, we reached out to Lucasfilm Publicity, who confirmed that “our presence at SDCC 2017 will be focused on our booth on the convention floor, so there will be no press events or interview opportunities this year.”

By being focused on the booth and convention floor at the convention, there’s an obvious gap in what they won’t be bringing to the convention — panels and talent. While we’re sure that Friday will still be Star Wars Day at San Diego Comic-Con, with panels for Star Wars toys, books, and more, it appears that The Last Jedi won’t be part of that equation.

Fans had hoped that although Star Wars: Rogue One didn’t attend last year, that Disney and Lucasfilm might make a push for The Last Jedi, so that Star Wars would have a film panel presence every other year. That doesn’t appear to be in the cards.

Breaking Down the San Diego Comic-Con 2017 Panel Schedule — Major Rooms by Day

If you’re anything like us, you probably already have your Comic-Con schedule started (and if you don’t — why not?!). Especially with panels, though, it’s helpful to know what else is in the panel room, as sure, your panel might be a walk-in by itself — but what if something major is right after it? ‘Stargate SG-1’ Celebrates 20th Anniversary with Comic-Con Panel

This year marks the 20th anniversay of Stargate SG-1, and the occasion will be celebrated at San Diego Comic-Con.

On Thursday, July 20 from 6PM-7PM, attendees will be able to head to the Marriott Marquis Grand Room 1 & 2 for a panel with Damian Beuer (Host, Legion M co-founder), David Read (Gateworld), Sam Toles (Senior Vice President of Digital & New Platforms, MGM), Kieran Dickson (Stargate Consultant & Editorial Director), and “special guests” as they celebrate the fandom. There will be exclusive news, sneak peeks, and giveaways — so come ready to embark on a new journey.

There’s no mention of cast, unfortunately — but with the promise of “special guests”, it’s certainly not impossible.

Are you excited that Stargate is opening the gate again? Let us know in the comments.

‘The Gifted’ Wraps Up San Diego Comic-Con 2017 – Potential for Offsite

The Hilton Bayfront is getting all dressed up for San Diego Comic-Con this year, courtesy of The Gifted. Large banners alerting attendees that “The X-Gene Can’t Be Seen” and to “Get Tested” now are up on the Bayfront’s parking structure, as of today.

While that’s very exciting, we might be more excited about what this could potentially mean.

One of the things we’ve been most excited about here at The San Diego Comic-Con Unofficial Blog is an offsite activation that actually happened at Upfronts back in May (and you can read more about it on Deadline). There, FOX promoted The Gifted with a Sentinel Services Mutant Testing Center, where participants could choose to have their DNA “tested” to see if they were a mutant. Willing participants received a cheek swab genetic test from nurses at the testing station, with some being told that they carried the mutant gene. Everyone also received a “I Got Tested” sticker.

Street teams also roamed the area in New York, dressed as Sentinel Services agents and letting people know they could get tested. From Deadline, here’s a look:

There’s no word yet on whether this same activation, or a version of it, will show up at San Diego Comic-Con. But it seems more likely given the messaging on the banners.

Either way, The Gifted will be represented at San Diego Comic-Con with a panel on Friday, July 21 from 3:45PM-4:45PM in Ballroom 20.

(Please don’t let this be like the Mr. Robot ferris wheel!)

‘Doctor Who’ Gets San Diego Comic-Con Final Farewell Panel for Peter Capaldi, ‘Dirk Gently’

Peter Capaldi’s tenure as Doctor Who will be up before the end of the year – but that leaves just enough time for him to make one final round in Hall H, for fans to get a proper farewell.

Deadline revealed that Doctor Who will be in Hall H on Sunday, July 23 (along with Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency). While Capaldi’s final season of Doctor Who will be over before the convention, there’s still a Christmas special set to air this December – so there’s still news to tease. Could they reveal the new doctor at the panel? Showrunner Steven Moffat, Capaldi, and “other members of the cast and creatives”.

There’s no cast mentioned for Dirk Gently, but creator Max Landis and star Elijah Wood are both already confirmed to make an appearance at the convention – so they’ll surely be there. We’ll update when we know more.

Under the Tents: Funko, Timeless, Printed in Blood, Justin Harder, The Thing 35th Anniversary Art Book

If you thought our last Under the Tents column was cute, this one is downright adorable. Sure, there’s some weirdness mixed in, but this is San Diego Comic-Con we’re talking about. It’s par for the course. In this UTT, you’ll find cuteness from Neysa Bové and Ash Evans, awesomeness from Alex Ross and Justin Harder, and a little weirdness from Random Skull Productions. Not the least of it all is an epic contest from Funko. Read on, fellow con-goers.

Here’s a look at what you might have missed:

  • Independent publisher Printed in Blood is releasing an officially licensed commemorative art book for the 35th Anniversary of John Carpenter’s classic film, The Thing. The book is a gorgeous collection full of original art by A-List creators such as David Mack (Jessica Jones covers), Eric Powell (The Goon), Cat Staggs (Wonder Woman), and more. The book is available for pre-order but will debut at SDCC this year, available at Aspen Comics booth #2320.

  • Funko usually goes all-out for SDCC, and this year is proving to be no exception. They’re giving away one of everything at their SDCC booth to one lucky winner. How do I enter this amazing contest, you may ask? Just RT this tweet and follow @OriginalFunko on Twitter to have a chance to win this massive haul.

  • We’ve known for a long time now that Marvel will be in Hall H this year. Unfortunately, the star of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tom Holland, will not be on hand. He announced he will be holding a charity screening for Homecoming in London on July 23. Since we highly doubt he will fly from San Diego back to London in time to make it to the event, we don’t expect him to participate in Marvel’s SDCC activities. Does this lower the chances of an Infinity War appearance? Possibly, but there’s no shortage of cast for that film, either.

  • It’s cancelled! Wait, no, it’s not! Brian Truitt from USA Today announced he will be the moderator for NBC’s resurrected Timeless panel, which will take place on Thursday, July 20 from 3:30PM-4:30PM in Room 6BCF. Don’t be late for this one – Rufus won’t be able to take you back to see anything you miss.

  • Four Horsemen Studios has been teasing images of their SDCC exclusives for months. They’ve finally revealed the first exclusive they plan to bring to SDCC from their Mythic Legions wave: Adamonn. According to Action Figure Insider, Four Horsemen will begin taking pre-orders for their exclusives on Wednesday, July 19 (Preview Night), which can then be picked up from SDCC.

  • If you thought the cuteness stopped with our last UTT, think again. David Colman of David’s Doodles showed off a preview of a new line he’ll debut at Booth #1134: Animalquettes. He’ll preview two more of these critters before he debuts them at SDCC.

Instagram Photo

  • Ryan Benjamin is getting the band back together. He announced a Wildstorm reunion to celebrate its 25th anniversary, which will include Jim Lee and a lot of other insanely talented artists. The reunion will be held at the San Diego Comic Arts Gallery in Liberty Station on Saturday, July 22 from 7:30PM-9PM.

Instagram Photo

  • A Tribe Called Quest? No, A Shop Called Quest. A Shop Called Quest announced the launch of a pin game/patch game at SDCC this year in conjunction with Hasbro. Head to Booth #4519 to find these SDCC exclusives.

Instagram Photo

  • In our previous UTTs, we’ve mention Martin Hsu’s Kindred Figures Artist Series. Emma Sancartier, creator behind Odd Fauna, showed off this little critter that will be available at Hsu’s Booth #4530 during SDCC.

Instagram Photo

Instagram Photo

  • Artist Allen Williams showed off a limited edition print he’ll have at Booth #4613 this year. If you can’t make it to SDCC, you can also order it here.

Instagram Photo

  • Spiffing, local San Diego makers of handmade, vintage, and otherwise awesome goods, announced a Pinup Pop Up event set to take place during SDCC. We’ll keep an eye out for their official announcement.

Instagram Photo

  • Disney artist Neysa Bové branches into Game of Thrones territory with her “Mother of Derpy Dragons” mini painting. Look for this and a lot more of her work at the Gallery Nucleus Booth #2643.

Instagram Photo

  • Ash Evans cranks up the cuteness factor to 11 with her latest piece, Lucky Cat. But she’s not just about cats. She does the most adorable bunnies, too. Look for her work at the Art Show in the Manchester Grand Hyatt.

  • We’ve heard that everybody poops. Apparently, so do droids. Alex from Random Skull Productions teased his SDCC exclusive “R2-DPOO.” Look for the full reveal coming soon.

Instagram Photo

  • Artist Brittney Lee showed off her design for another toucan pin she’ll have at SDCC this year. Can’t make it to SDCC? No worries; she’ll have it on her Etsy shop after the con. But who wants to wait for something like this?

Instagram Photo

  • Let’s dial the cuteness down a little. Bigshot Toyworks made an SDCC exclusive Blastbeast for Nuclear Blast Records to bring with them to Booth #501 this year.

Instagram Photo

  • Alex Pardee showed off a page from his new Bunnywith book, which is set to debut at SDCC. He may have made a typo in his tweet, though, as he will be at Booth #5503.

  • Artist Scott Hattox is still hard at work creating art for SDCC. He recently posted a work-in-progress of his Thor vs Hulk Ragnarok acrylic on canvas. Find this and a lot more of his great work at Booth #1829.

Instagram Photo

  • We think Justin Harder totally nailed the SDCC experience with his “Hall H Line” 10×20 print (“What’s this line for?” ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). Line up at CLAUS Studios’ Table #O-08 in Small Press for this limited edition print.

  • Josh Warner showed off some action plushes (not stuffed animals) he’ll have at Table #L-09 in Small Press. Whatever you call them, I think we have our cuteness factor back.

Anything we missed? Let us know in the comments, drop us a line or tweet us at @SD_Comic_Con.

Better Look at Conan Funko Pop!s Heading to San Diego Comic-Con

Just like in years past, Funko Pop!s featuring Conan O’Brien will be given out at the tapings for Conan during San Diego Comic-Con (and no, we don’t know about Saturday tickets, sorry!). Funko offered a better look at four figures, which include Conan dressed up as Spider-Man, a Jedi, a White Walker, and The Flash.

Additionally, the Pop! vinyl figures will be available through “activations and giveaways taking place in San Diego” – which in the past, has included giveaways at the TBS booth and as of last year, a morning drawing over at the Manchester Grand Hyatt.

There will also be a limited edition black and white Conan Pop!, called “MonoConan”, which will only be available through the activations/giveaways. Here’s a look at him:
