Jones called in to the Geekscape podcast today to discuss the “Cosmunity” App, of which he serves as the Chief Strategy Officer. As an avid con-goer and geek himself, Jones and his partners decided to create an app that would “keep the con-community alive and connected year-round”.
The app will allow users to do a myriad of things — including upload cosplay photos, connect with fans, vendors, and fanartists — and also connect with your favorite celebrities (and maybe even get married by them!).
“I’m actually marrying people at San Diego Comic-Con,” Jones said. “We’re going to do huge cosplay weddings and let you re-new your vows this year at San Diego.”
There will also be a “Beams” feature on the app, which celebrities can choose to turn on when they want. The feature will essentially send their exact location to fans — which will come in handy when alerting attendees what panels people are on, and hopefully not lead to any restraining orders.
“We’re [also] doing cosplay buses that will be going around there with all the folks at Syfy and NBC. We’re doing kits – if your cosplay outfit needs touch-up, we’ll have stations you can go to for your cosplay emergency,” Jones said. “I’ll be doing all kinds of crazy stuff, including panels at San Diego this year.”
Jones hopes that the app will serve as a one-stop shop for attendees and fans, rather than having to hop between different convention apps.
“If I want to go jump in the Star Trek fandom, I should be able to go login to that fandom, I should be able to see what celebrities are going to be at that con that are in my fandom, and also be with people who enjoy stuff within the same fandom as me,” Jones said. “I should meet cosplayers within my fandom. It just seems strange to me that that’s not what any con app does.”
