Funko Moving to Sails Ticketing Distribution System for San Diego Comic-Con 2016

[UPDATE #2] Funko has now confirmed all of this information, and clarified a bit more. Tickets will have a date and time on it to return to the booth, and while it doesn’t specify that tickets draws aren’t a lottery and are instead first-come/first-serve, that very much sounds like what it is. Sails ticket draws will be Thursday-Sunday. There’s no official word on if their booth will be first-come/first-serve on Preview Night – but they may already be assuming their 100 wristbanded Funko Funatics board members will take up all of those spots.

You can read the complete post on their site, but here’s the gist:

  • Attendee badges only.
  • One drawing per person, per day.
  • This random drawing is for a chance to get a wristband to purchase items at the Funko booth.
  • Winning a wristband does not guarantee you of any specific item at the Funko booth. Items may sell out by the time you reach the front of the line.
  • Wristbands are for a specific date and time and must be redeemed for that specific session.
  • Wristbands are not transferrable.
  • There will be a strict limit of one of each item per wristband.
  • You will not be able to line up at the Funko booth before your session begins.
  • ADA attendees must also go through the lottery process outside the Sail Pavilion, as noted above.

[UPDATE] And, for anyone who doubted this – Comic-Con International has now confirmed that Funko is moving to the Sails Pavilion for ticket draws this year. Exact procedures for how the drawings will work – random, timed, etc. – should be announced in the next week or so.

[PREVIOUS]After the process to get into the Funko exclusives line last year was met mostly with frustration, confusion, unannounced ticket distributions that happened completely randomly halfway through the show, and a lot of anger — something had to change for 2016.

Although Funko keeps saying they’ll announce how this year’s booth procedures will work at the end of their exclusive reveals, on An Englishman in San Diego’s podcast earlier this year, Funko PR maven Yoko McCann said that she fully expected them to move to a Sails ticketing distribution this year.

Since then, they’re said (more than once) that they’re moving to a Sails ticketing distribution system.

What that means is that instead of an immediate mad dash to the exhibit floor, attendees will presumably now head to Sails Pavilion to line up to draw for a ticket, similar to Hasbro and Bandai. The question at this point isn’t if that’s happening (it is), but what the ticket system from that point on will be — will all tickets be “winners” until they’re gone, and will they have an assigned time to head to the booth? Will there be random winners?

The good news is that this potentially curtails some exhibitors from getting the jump on the line, as it’s harder to line up in Sails before doors open than it is on the general exhibit floor. The other good news is basically that this has the potential to be organized and less chaotic — which is always a plus in the already-chaotic world of Comic-Con.

Preview Night will likely still operate the same as last year (except potentially minus the wonky, random tickets) with a first-come, first-serve line, similar to what Hasbro does now for Preview Night. Some Funko Funatics board members already have wristbands to the booth, but that appears to be a one-time perk for loyal Funko fans — and we don’t expect wristbands to extend beyond those attendees on Preview Night.

So, there you have it. Exactly what we’ve been saying all year. Do you think this is good news? Bad news? Let us know in the comments.
